The celebration of a struggle

I live in Bloemfontein and as most people know by now our city is hosting the celebrations of the ANC centenary. Some positives of this celebration is the fixing of potholes in the streets (at last), the replacement of worn out South African flags at the city entrances and the re-painting of faded road signs on the road.

But most of all one notices the hundreds of banners and posters on every lamppost just to make sure everyone knows that the ANC is 100 years old. One of these posters that caught my eye was the one that says: “Celebrating 100 years of selfless struggle.”

This made me realise that that is exactly the problem with the ANC. It has been struggling for 100 years. At first the struggle was against apartheid, but since 1994 they are struggling to govern. They struggle to find honest leaders. Many senior ANC officials have been or are currently being prosecuted. They even struggle to find an honest chief of police, failing twice! They struggle to improve education.

Even though they are spending a larger percentage of the budget on education than most countries, education in the so-called township schools went from bad to worst and South Africa is now worse off than in the latter years of apartheid. They struggle to provide proper health care. Hospitals that were once some of the best in Africa (and even the world) are now mismanaged and in a disastrous condition.

Perhaps where they are struggling the most is Local Government and service delivery. Towns that were once beautiful, clean, well run municipalities, are now in a terrible state. Just drive through places like Mokopane (previously Potgietersrus), Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and even Mthatha to see this deterioration. Corruption, self-interest and greed have unfortunately ensured that the struggle continued since 1994.

I sincerely hope that the 100^th year of struggle is the last one. I hope that Pres Zuma will announce that 2012 will now be the first year of achievement and striving for excellence! Let’s all hope that the ANC will now put skill, knowledge, experience and innovation on the top of their requirements list when new leaders are chosen. Please stop struggling and start performing!

ANC Wikipedia page ‘wikibombed’ in secrecy bill protest

Despite international and local outcry, the controversial “Protection of State Information Bill”, more commonly referred to the “secrecy bill”, has taken its first steps to becoming law. Opponents of the proposed law have promised to continue fighting it tooth and nail. That fight was, once again, taken online with the Wikipedia link page of the African National Congress (ANC) having been “wikibombed”.

Wikibombing, as the Urban Dictionary defines it, is “The act of intentionally going on Wikipedia and putting false information about a topic, OR, completely destroying the article all together.” Probably the most memorable example of wikibombing was 2010′s “Wanky Balls Festival” controversy.

The ANC is certainly no stranger to cyber-protests by cyber-attack, particularly given the fact that the website of the party’s controversial youth arm, the ANC Youth League, has suffered multiple hacks (see here and here). To Memeburn’s knowledge, however, this is the first time that this form of cyber-protesting has been employed against the party.

Using the same style as one of the most popular posts from when South Africans took to social media to protest the secrecy bill, the section on criticism of the ANC, had tracts of text “censored”.

By the time a screengrab of the page edits hit Twitter, where it is being shared with much glee, the page had been re-edited to remove the black-outs. Looking at the discussion tab of the page one can see that the page is hotly contested with some comments calling it “propaganda written by a third grader,” “one-sided,” and “having two main editors who are both ANC supporters”.

Due to the ANC using its sizeable parliamentary majority to push the controversial bill through parliament, the ANC has faced condemnation from many including Nobel laureates Nadine Gordimer and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Many of the critiques on the ANC’s actions have stated that the formerly famed liberation party, has abandoned the principles of its former leaders including celebrated international figure of peace and reconciliation, Nelson Mandela.

The day the bill was passed, struggle stalwarts office put out a statement which was characterised as “slamming” the bill.

The ANC Youth League says it is already planning what to wage war against once it has won Julius Malema’s “economic war” against white capital in South Africa, with strategists predicting a total onslaught against the few chickens that will survive the economic meltdown. “We’ll fight anything, really, as long as it keeps us in the headlines,” said one planner.

Malema’s threats, drafted by the ANCYL’s Bureau for Frightening White People So As To Get Into The Sunday Papers, called for South Africa’s landless poor to confiscate whites’ property, and described whites as criminals.

This morning the landless poor said they had heard Malema’s call to arms but remained ambivalent.

“Look, we know he’s just a self-enriching megalomaniac with a nifty turn of phrase,” explained Downtrodden Dube, who has lived in a milk carton since 1974. “But to be honest we’d rather have a self-enriching megalomaniac punting our cause than the usual sound of crickets you get when you mention economic transformation.”

However, the ANCYL denied that it was simply grandstanding.

We are going to take back all the land that is historically ours,” explained spokesman Zanu Phosa. “Mostly in Sandton and Cape Town’s Atlantic seaboard.”

He said that the second phase of the economic war would be to take back “all the luxury German cars that were stolen from our people by the Dutch and British colonialists in the 17th and 18th Centuries”.

When it was suggested to Phosa that a Zimbabwe-style confiscation of white-owned land – and the inevitable flight of white capital – would hurt poor black South Africans far more than whites, he said that “there are always casualties in war, even in a fake vote-buying war”.

"If we have to starve a million blacks to mildly inconvenience a hundred whites, then that is a sacrifice we are willing to make,” he said.

He added that plans were already in place to launch a massive strike against any chickens that survived the future economic meltdown, as part of a war against stabbing hunger pains.

“For too long chickens have strutted around uneaten, flaunting their feathery tendencies,” he said. “But the day is coming when they will pay for their arrogance, when 50-million starving people come for them.”

He said once the chickens and hunger pains had been defeated, the League would declare war on international aid agencies for delivering emergency maize rations in “racist white sacks”, before finally declaring war on the flies that gathered on the lips of the League’s surviving cadres.

South Africa Falling Into Decay

South Africa – the name conjures up visions of white colonialism, riches of diamonds and gold, beautiful cities, beautiful people, rich farmlands and technical innovation.

A strong and vibrant country with a modern army and air force and an air of expectancy, handed down from Afrikaner father to son, that their land would be the greatest in the whole continent.

Well it does to me and this is what the country used to be like when I lived there 40 years ago. Johannesburg was a thriving metropolis of great buildings and the frenzied rush of people going about their affairs much like any other major city in the world.

It was such a powerhouse of people, ideas and innovations and the strong Boer mentality over rode all.

Today Johannesburg appears to be a run down shanty town with decrepit buildings, boarded up windows, filthy garbage riddled streets and squalor everywhere.

What happened?

The infamous pass laws were rescinded in the early 90’s and the black man took over the country.

This utopia, this land of riches, this gemstone in the crown of the continent is now like so many other African nations, a struggling mix of different tribes coming to terms with life in the 21st century.

Unfortunately for these black Africans, they have not been able to rise above tribal culture and are cursed with a background that has not reached the stage which would enable them to mentally grasp all the requirements that are needed to administer a complex and busy country.

From being the underdog to being the dominant force today has created major schisms within the overall South African society.

There is an ongoing payback mentality that encourages blacks to take from the whites in many different ways. In one way the houses of white people are regularly burgled and effects stolen. This is not done covertly and gangs of blacks regularly threaten households. In another way there is what is now called ‘Black Empowerment’ or BEE where blacks are given preference over whites for available jobs. This stupid practice gives the unskilled African peasant direct involvement in manning the infrastructure support that runs the country. As a consequence the major power supply company Eskom is unable to maintain its equipment as most of the trained skilled white staff are no longer employed. This has caused frequent power supply problems so that they had to rely on power shedding or in other words maintaining power to select parts of their industry rather than all consumers who need it.

The current youth leader of the ANC, Julius Malema, keeps telling his followers to kill the Boer, one man one bullet. He has recently been found guilty of inciting racial hatred and fined 50,000 Rand for his troubles. Not that this has changed his tactic one iota and on a recent trip to Zimbabwe he went out of his way to repeat the phrase to all who would listen.

Over 3,000 white farmers have been murdered since the ANC took over in a deliberate government policy to get whites to give up their land. From being a rich farming country under white rule South Africa now faces the prospect of importing food to feed the masses. Many whites claim that there is now a policy of genocide levelled against Boer farmers as a result of the ANC policy to grab land. This is the same process that started in Zimbabwe and will have the same result.

On a recent trip to Zimbabwe there were talks between Mugabe and Malema on how to take over the remaining land still in the hands of white minorities. Now there is also talk of the mining industry which made SA very rich, being nationalised for the benefit of the black politicians.

Law and order is a thing of the past now. There is no law of protection for whites and no laws for the blacks to abide by. Even Jacob Zuma the current leader of the ANC had a number of rape and corruption charges levelled against him by the then law and order anti- corruption team called the Scorpions. The ANC had an easy answer to all this, they simply disbanded the unit and the charges were dropped!

In fact many of the black policemen supposedly upholding what little law and order is left, are themselves involved in burglarising, raping and armed robberies. The number of deaths of whites has been unrecorded although the litany of deaths occurs on a daily basis.

Many people felt that with the advent of black rule and empowerment blacks and whites would be able to sit together and maintain a strong and prosperous country that would continue to be the envy of Sub Saharan Africa. Today the situation is so bad that the country is becoming another Zimbabwe and whites are powerless to stop it but can only look on in horror as their once great country crumbles about them.

Due to the political process of giving to the black at the expense of the white there are now 450,000 white people living below the poverty line in shanty towns around the country. The majority of these people are from Afrikaans backgrounds who would normally be the underclass looking after fairly menial jobs, railway workers, cleaners etc. Since those jobs are now taken by blacks these unfortunate men, women and children have no recourse but to become part of the homeless generation, forgotten by more affluent whites as well as the black government. Even some soup kitchens that were set up by well minded individuals have been closed by bureaucrats who say that the whites must fend for themselves. It’s only the help from other whites that keeps these unfortunate people with some form of subsistence.

White liberalism is to blame for the problems affecting South Africa and the fall of the white Governments pre 1994. The world saw a country with blacks being oppressed and demanded change for the betterment of the black population. Just like Rhodesia several years earlier. Today, who has benefited from these changes? Certainly not the blacks as the majority of them are now far worse off than ever they were under white rule. Again, the classic example is Zimbabwe under the megalomaniac Mugabe who has robbed his country blind whilst 98% of his followers still live in shantytowns without the benefits of modern civilisation and in abject poverty.

Every one of the ruling politicians in South Africa lives a life of wealth and privilege, with the latest cars, biggest houses in the best suburbs etc., yet their followers are very much worse off than they were when the whites ruled the country.

Apart from the trashing of cities which have become sleazy rubbish dumps the hospital services are almost non existent. It’s hard to accept that the country that pioneered the first heart transplant under Dr. Christian Barnard has now a run down medical service which once used to be the envy of the world.

Everything about the country today smacks of total incompetence with inmates running the asylum for the rest of the inmates who just have no idea what is going on.

The murder of Eugene Terreblanche may be just the last nail in the coffin of apathy that has affected the white liberals in this broken country.

Indeed, apathy is probably the correct word to describe how the rest of the world views this former nation. It just seems that the power brokers amongst civilised nations are just sitting on the sidelines waiting for the continent to implode before they go back in perhaps 40 years time or so, and pick up the pieces once more. Although by that time the Chinese will have probably got in first and blacks will have a far stronger, stricter and nastier overseer than the whites ever were.

The rowdy crowd burnt T-shirts with Zuma's face and some ANC flags - with some of the protesters carrying posters that called Zuma a "rapist and a Polokwane disaster".

‘Green monster’ could wreck property rights in South Africa

The green paper on land reform, finally made public on 31st August 2011, is part of a new assault on the Constitution and the rule of law.

On the same day as the green paper was released, the deputy minister of correctional services, Mr Ngoako Ramatlhodi, let the cat out of the bag when he said the African National Congress (ANC) had made ‘fatal concessions’ at the time of the political transition. Given the balance of forces at the time (including the collapse of the Soviet Union), it had accepted a Constitution which ‘emptied the legislature and executive of real political power’ and ‘immigrated (sic) the little power left [to them] to civil society and the Judiciary’. [The Times 1 September 2010]

Mr Ramatlhodi seems to forget that the 1996 Constitution was drafted by an elected constituent assembly dominated by the ANC. In addition, it reflects a very wide-ranging consensus that the new South Africa should be a constitutional democracy in which Parliament and the Cabinet would have to act in accordance with constitutional principles and provisions, failing which both law and executive action could be set aside by a Constitutional Court charged with the task of upholding the Constitution at all times.

Already the ANC has white-anted the Constitution in various ways, and particularly via its strategy of cadre deployment. The green paper on land reform goes much further, for it seeks to oust the jurisdiction of the courts in two key spheres

in determining the amount of compensation payable on the expropriation of land, a task it gives to a state official (a new valuer-general) in place of the courts;

in deciding whether title to land should be ‘invalidated’, a job it gives to a state bureaucracy (a new land management commission).

The green paper also seeks to empower this commission to ‘seize or confiscate land gotten by fraudulent or corrupt means’. The meaning of this criterion is unclear, but the green paper perhaps supplies a hint when it suggests that land acquired in the colonial and apartheid era was lost to black people ‘through force or deceit’.

The green paper also suggests that more and more land will come under state ownership. First, by introducing ceilings on land in private ownership, it implicitly requires commercial farmers with more land than the maximum to dispense with the ‘excess’. The State could decide to expropriate ‘excess’ land at valuations decided by the valuer-general. Even if this does not occur, many farmers might find themselves obliged to divest themselves of ‘excess’ land at the same time, which will flood the market and drive prices down. Since the only buyer to whom the ceilings will not apply will be the Government, the State will be able to take advantage of artificially low prices to buy up large tracts of land.

In addition, land already belonging to the State will no longer be available for sale to private owners, while those wishing to farm on it will have to be content with leasehold tenure. The case of Ms Veronica Moos shows how insecure such tenure could be. For Ms Moos was an emergent farmer who was illegally evicted from her leasehold land by former agriculture and land affairs minister Ms Lulu Xingwana, who arbitrarily decided that Ms Moos was not using the land well enough, even though inspection showed it to be well maintained and modestly productive.

Moreover, land in communal areas will not be available for sale to individuals either. Instead it will remain in communal ownership, although people living on it may in time acquire ‘institutionalised use rights’ of uncertain content. Communal land will thus remain in public ownership, while land owned by foreigners who breach new conditions of title will be forfeit to the Government and is likely to end up in state ownership too.

The upshot is that more and more land will be owned by the Government – and that more and more people will occupy land at the pleasure of the State. Instead of helping black South Africans to experience the security of land ownership, the ANC seems intent on preventing them from ever acquiring this foundation for economic and political independence.

People outside the agricultural sector might see the green paper as posing problems for farmers alone, but this is a mistake. The green paper uses the emotive land issue to bypass the Judiciary and establish a new norm: that the amount of compensation payable on expropriation can be decided by a state official (the valuer-general) and that title to land can be set aside by a new bureaucratic body, the land management commission.

Once this norm has taken root, there will be little to prevent it being extended to mines, banks, firms, shares, or any other asset.

The Trouble With Blacks

“I’m not a racist, but…”
It is how most conversations with a Londoner start when discussing the prevailing ethnic—and specifically black—issue. Make no mistake, an issue it is, as the recent rioting across Britain proves. Look at the areas affected. Look at the instigators. Look at the feral aggression. Look at the jewelry, the designer goods, the cell-phone and sneaker stores looted. Look at the faces of those arrested. I think the demographic—in spite of reflexive attempts by broadcasters and the liberal left to play it down—is pretty clear. The majority of thugs out on the street are black. Quelle surprise. Oh yes, there will be the platitudes and excuses, the talk of poverty and deprivation and disenchantment and social exclusion. As one rioter put it: “We is protestin’ by thievin’.” And it is all utter bullshit. Yet you will never find a politician or self-appointed community leader with the balls and bottle to say it as it is, to break the taboo, to speak it out aloud. So let me spell it out for everyone — THE BLACKS HAVE A PROBLEM.

Only they would tell you that raw criminality is somehow a political act of defiance. Only they could shift the cause for their pillaging and arson to the system that apparently invites it—after all, a department store can seem so bright and shiny and provoking. Sure, many Afro-Caribbean citizens are law-abiding, but many also—including a vast percentage of young black males—are not. Check the statistics. Indeed, blacks carry out the majority of London street crime and two-thirds of firearms offenses. And the excuses come thick and fast.

Few play the blame game or point-the-finger exercise quite so avidly as the black community. Few have evolved such an advanced culture of victimhood from which their overdeveloped sense of grievance and entitlement has grown. They have the same education and opportunity as anyone else, but—oh no—they are special, are downtrodden, are misunderstood. We must atone and respect (or “respek”) them because they exist. Because of their gangsta rap. Because their young men wear hoods or carry knives or manage to walk in a menacing pimp roll. Funny, I always thought respect had to be earned. How white, outmoded, and middle-class of me.

Pervading all is the attitude that it is not their fault and never ever their responsibility. Should a young black be excluded from school, it is not because he is lazy, disruptive, or stupid, but because the education system is against him. Should the police stop him, it is not because he acts suspiciously or his kind commits most robberies, but because the police are inherently racist. Should he fail to gain a job, it is absolutely the employer’s fault and not because the applicant was sullen, lippy, and barely house-trained. So it goes on. And on and on. Complaint rather than effort and attainment has become the cultural norm. The liberal apologists are ever there to explain away and facilitate the mindset. Just like Muslims who will not accept jihadi extremists draw on the Islamic faith or environmentalists who cannot admit population growth is a key root of global warming, so few in the black community—even when the evidence is plain, even when the police run Operation Trident directly to tackle black gun crime—will put up their hands and say with honesty: “We have a problem and it is our own fault and our responsibility.”

To utter such words would be construed as heresy, would be to stray from the adopted liberal-left consensus that every ill, every crime, every mishap within the black community is due to slavery and oppression by the whites. No matter slavery in Britain was abolished in 1833—we must still suffer the rage and allow plasma-screen televisions and top-of-the-range footwear to be looted from a burning store.

Welfare has institutionalized the belief in something-for-nothing, the attitude that the state will provide and pick up the pieces, the bill, and the broken glass and replace work and absent fathers with ready cash and immediate housing. No point in parenting when someone else will do it for you. It is fine to smash a shop front when insurance or the taxpayer will help the owners restock. It is fine to ruin a livelihood when you have no concept of earning. It is fine to take something that is not yours when it is on display and your gut and jungle logic tells you to possess it. This is what the sixty-year experiment in state handouts has achieved. The work is available if the indigenous black population seeks it. Indeed, Britain brings in tens of thousands of Gambians and Ghanaians and other migrants to staff hospitals and care homes and fill a “labor shortage” that does not exist. In accepting that Afro-Caribbeans have not needed to work, we have entrenched them in their postcode gangs and their ghetto. Softly, softly, the police and social services have gone. Regard the situation.

Education used to be the way up and the way out. No more. A generation of blacks feels no need, does not see the point, has no fathers or family to kick their backsides and tell them to strive. After all, it is so much easier to smoke ganja, to shoplift, to snatch a purse or bag, to hold a knife to a throat and rape a “bitch.” If all they are told is that they are the victims, the Earth’s rightful inheritors, and that cash can be generated without much effort, then they will follow their peers and the path of least resistance. The young offender institutions are full of them. Certainly there are doctors and lawyers and accountants in the black community, but they are few and scattered, and their middle class lacks depth and robustness. The knock-on is lack of aspiration.

What is left is a misplaced emphasis on street culture and the Afro-Caribbean way. Forgive me, but if what I had brought to British life was goat curry, carnival floats, crack cocaine, violence, and hip-hop, I would not be that proud. There are good people out there, people who strive and struggle and do their best. But they are undermined by both white and black apologists, by acceptance of indiscipline and of felony as occupational right, by a conspiracy of silence that prevents open debate. I have not heard a single BBC reporter say the word “black.” The situation would be absurd were it not so serious and the problems so deep.

The black American comedian Chris Rock once declared: “On one side, there’s black people. On the other, you’ve got niggers. The niggers have got to go. I love black people, but I hate niggers.” If the Afro-Caribbeans in London do not themselves confront and address the embedded flaws in their outlook and society, such things will be said with hatred and not laughter.

As for future riots—and they will come—the political class will continue to talk soothingly of “British” policing when all we really require is effective policing. Personally, I did not vote to allow London to become Jamaica’s brutal cockpit. I will thus be leaving my front door wide open and scattering a trail of glittering objects and designer wares to entice the raiders to my home. And I will be waiting for them. Then we can play.

School-leavers fully prepared for unemployment, says Education Department

The national Department of Education has hailed as a “runaway success” more than a decade of outcomes-based education, theoretical cul-de-sacs, wholesale cooking of results and being held hostage by robber-barons posing as teachers’ unions, saying that school-leavers are finally being adequately prepared for a lifetime of unemployment.

This morning Suxtobiyu Khumalo, head of the department’s Committee for Planning Potential Education Outcomes That Result Potentially from Planning By Committee, said that South Africa could now consider itself a world leader in providing school-leavers with the critical lack of non-skills they needed to be competitively uncompetitive in today’s over-saturated unemployment market.

“Like the academically disinclined 22-year-old in Matric, our motto is: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” said Khumalo. “You know, like the national education policy for the last five years: do the same thing every year and hope for exponentially improving results, and when those don’t happen, do the same thing again, except this time make disappointed comments in the Sunday newspapers before you get redeployed as Deputy Minister of Forestry.”

According to Khumalo, the Committee’s research had concluded that traditional education was too focussed on equipping students for productive, professional careers.

“Everybody knows that unemployment is a growth industry at the moment, and if you’re going to get in on the ground floor – or in the gutter, where many of our finest graduates now find themselves – you’ve got to plan accordingly.”

He said that as a result, most schoolchildren in South Africa were now placed in “post-school simulation scenario role-play simulations – did I already say ‘simulation’?”

“We provide a totally realistic model of their careers as unemployed people,” he explained. “They sit in dark, overcrowded rooms, and are sporadically shouted at, ordered around or molested by people in leadership positions.”

He said many graduates had written to him, often in soot scribbled on UIF forms, thanking him for preparing them for the realities of modern South Africa.

“At least I think they were thanking me,” he said. “Or maybe they were asking for medical attention and emergency rations. That’s the great thing about Outcomes-based Education: you can totally make up your own mind about stuff.”

The ANC Youth League says that weekend revelations about Julius Malema’s trust fund were not a surprise to them and that they shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone else. “Julius lives according to an ancient Pedi custom which says you shouldn’t judge a man until you have strolled a stretch in his sandals,” said spokesperson Fistful Mdala. “He is just trying to experience what it is like to be white.”

Mdala added that aside from the trust fund, Malema had also acquired a farm so that he could research the pros and cons of land grabs from both sides.

“It might look bad now,” said Mdala, “But this way when Julius puts his arm around the shoulders of a farmer who has just had his land seized by a 20 year old war veteran, and tells him that he knows how it feels, he really will know.”

Mdala said that aside from the trust fund and the farm, Malema had been exploring several other white tendencies that the paper had failed to report.
“Julius also has a maid called Gladys who comes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He hangs out at organic markets on Saturday’s, watches rugby and wears veldskoens. ”

He added that Malema had toyed with the idea of living in a squat in Wimbledon for a while to ensure that he got the complete ‘white experience’ but that in the end he had not been that desperate to get the full experience.
When it was explained that having the Trust Fund was not the issue – that it was rather a case of where the money came from – Mdala said, “Exactly!”

He added, “We have no issue with the privately educated white youth, who take gap years between their gap years instead of calling themselves unemployed and similarly nobody should take issue with future President Malema for being similarly comfortable.

“The problem is with the dads and granddads, who exploited the poor black masses to make their fortunes.”
He said that in this regard the Youth League were delighted that Malema had mimicked the white experience perfectly.
Meanwhile asked to offer an adult opinion on the matter the ANC said that trust funds were standard procedure for high ranking members who were not elected. “It’s why we like being in an alliance with the SACP and COSATU,” said spokesperson Luscious Mpundu.
“For each position one of them fills, there’s another one of us in the queue at Capitec waiting to open a family trust.”

He said it was common knowledge within the ANC that it was far more profitable to operate from an unelected position.
“What good is influence and populist rhetoric if you don’t back it up with a trust fund?” he asked.

These days I find myself standing back , shaking my head and having a quiet chuckle at the many economic problems South Africa faces. I’ve even been known to silently mouth the words “told you so”. I realise this is not a good thing but I think it’s got something to do with age and the fourteen odd years I spent “farting against thunder” as a newspaper columnist. I was re-reading my first book, Out to Lunch, which was published almost ten years ago, and what I was writing about then I am still writing about today. Nothing has changed. We have learnt nothing and we still seem set on a course of self destruction. We are the Amy Winehouse of global economies.

Of course, pointing this sort of thing out inevitably leads to one being labelled a “racist” which is the predictable reaction one can expect from people too stupid to debate important issues. Launch into an attack on our government’s economic non-performance and you’re bound to be accused of wanting the black man to fail/not believing that the black man is entitled to wealth/not having made the transition to a new South Africa etc etc. It’s the biggest load of horse shit you can imagine but what more can you expect when first world thinking has to co-exist with the majority of a country still stuck in the middle ages? Because, let’s be brutally honest here, we may be the Cradle of Mankind but the early settlers certainly didn’t stumble across anything approaching a sophisticated and developed society (over to Biko Lives). After all, why invent the wheel when you don’t plan on going anywhere?

However, the confusion comes when a country like South Africa pretends that it wants to play with the big boys in the global playground but doesn’t have the stomach for it. Our latest and, to date, most embarrassing example is the way our government is treating the Walmart deal. Having eventually given a qualified go ahead for the US retailing giant to invest in SA it seems as though our Economic Development (sic) Minister Ebrahim Patel has changed his mind and now wants to put a permanent stain on Walmart’s reputation. This means that, even if the deal does come off, it will always have a taint. One wonders how a buffoon like Patel can hold such an important position but nothing surprises me these days. Most of those holding high office in this country I wouldn’t trust to put bread in a toaster without fucking it up. Our national anthem ought to be “Send in the Clowns”.

I heard on the radio last week that foreign investment had fallen 70% in the past year. Is it any wonder when we are so hostile to anyone who comes knocking on our door keen to do business? But is there any point in any of us suffering high blood pressure because of this? Absolutely not. The best course is to hedge your bets by getting money offshore and to significantly reduce the amount you pay to the taxman. If you have a small business here then wind it down before it gets seized, taxed or legislated out of existence. Why would anyone want to deal with a lazy and uncommitted unionised workforce and a government openly hostile to capitalism?

Forget all the bullshit about the ANC wanting to create jobs. That’s just a guilt trip being laid on the dwindling minority of the economically active. The government’s task is to create an environment conducive to job creation and economic prosperity. They’re clearly too dumb to understand that so why on earth would private enterprise want to try and help when it’s quite clear that the government is going to screw them over?

If you run a hospital you tend to put people with medical experience and knowledge in key positions. If you run a university, hopefully you would appoint well respected academics (although that clearly doesn’t apply at some of our Universities so it’s not a great example) as heads of faculties. When you run a country you would hope that people who have some experience or understanding of the business world would be given key cabinet positions but that doesn’t happen. Instead we have a clutch of luxury car driving halfwit Commies with lunatic ideas who simply cannot grasp the fact that we are sailing merrily on to failed nation status and are deaf to advice.

South Africa "just another country" in Africa

There are lots of South African articles doing the rounds, this is one of the best.

I have always tried to understand why Africa has not prospered with all the mineral wealth and available labour. This is without a doubt the most plausible explanation for me. I do hope I am completely wrong.

I expect, like me, you are aware that there has never been a prosperous black-led country, but perhaps it’s just because of “bad luck”, or whatever, for that incontrovertible fact.

Take Haiti as an example. Before the black slaves revolted and killed all the whites and half castes Haiti had a GNP greater than most of what is now the USA . It supplied 60% of all the sugar used in Europe. Today it is a wasteland. Apparently if you Google Earth the place you see is a sere, brown coloured landscape compared to the neighbouring Dominican Republic which is green and verdant. Twice the USA has occupied Haiti , building roads, ports, hospitals and schools while putting in a functional society. The moment the Americans left they reverted to dictatorship, voodoo, witchcraft, corruption and barbarism. They did not stagnate, they regressed to the primitive savagery of their forefathers

Since the 1960s, when the Congo expelled the Belgians this has been a mirror of African regression, moving steadily southwards until the example of Zimbabwe . Once a prosperous, well educated exporter of food the population now eat rats to survive.

Will SA go the same way?

There are those optimists who say “No, we have such a strong economy, such sophisticated infrastructure, such a talent pool, that we can never sink”.

My belief is that they have not considered the root cause of Africa’s failure. A cause that is not spoken about as it is fearfully politically incorrect, and probably illegal to speak about. That cause is the deficiencies of the black ”mentality”, for want of a better word.

Are there differences between races, or is race just a meaningless social construct? Until recently, I believed all races were the same under the skin variations, and that perceived differences were only the result of cultural differences. I believed in a common and equal humanity.

But things did not always ring true, observable anomalies were inexplicable if all men are the same.

Why, under apartheid, did the Indians prosper, become doctors, scientists, educators, merchants and professionals while the vast majority of the equally oppressed black Africans remained hewers of wood?

Why can black Africans run, jump and throw better than honkies, but why, out of a billion of them, have they never invented a single thing of any worth? Why have they, collectively, contributed absolutely nothing to the advancement of humanity.
Well the physical thing, the running, throwing bit is easily and uncontroversial answered. Simple, people of African descent (especially the Jamaicans) are genetically better equipped in this regard. Their muscle fibres are different and the typically have 15% more free testosterone than other peoples. Acknowledging this is regarded as racism. Unfortunately, racist or not, that is proven and a fact. Google it and you will find that for over 70 years, in test after test, done by dozens of university professors and Nobel laureates plus USA government studies, most people of African descent trail other races by a wide margin.

Of course I.Q. tests have been attacked, especially by those who perform badly at them, as one might expect them to do. Detractors claim cultural bias, dysfunctional families, past oppression, poor schooling and a host of other reasons for poor black performance, but the professors defend their contention that I.Q. is largely an inherited trait; that differences are inherent, built into a person’s inherited DNA.

For every argument attacking the validity of these tests they have a host of results confirming their accuracy and typicality. Fascinating stuff if you are interested in reading up on it.

The effect of high/low I.Q. has also been studied in depth, with fairly predictable results. Low I.Q. individuals performed badly in social class, family stability, income, educational levels, illegitimate pregnancy, single parent families, rate of prison incarceration, rape, violent crime etc. etc. etc.

I.Q. measurement measures different facets of intelligence and mental competence. Sadly it is in the absolutely vital sphere of cognitive ability that blacks score worst. This means they score abysmally in things like forward planning and anticipating the consequences of their actions.

It is this I.Q. (and testosterone) disparity that is blamed for the fact that African Americans are 5 times more likely to be imprisoned than white (including Hispanic) Americans, 9 times more likely than Americans of Asiatic descent. All in line with I.Q. distributions.

Once imprisonment for violent crimes are computed the numbers become stratospheric. These are American government collated statistics, so pretty accurate. Our government in SA do not, for obvious reasons, publish similar stats, but a pound to a pinch of salt they are even more astounding.

So why the lecture on I.Q.?

Well for a start you must understand that our ruling party are voted into power by a largely moronic plebiscite. I choose the word moronic intentionally. If the cut off point for moronic is an I.Q. of 70, half the voting population would be classified as such.

Only one in 40 black South Africans achieves the average I.Q. of his white fellow citizens. One in a hundred have the I.Q. to achieve university entrance requirements. That is why only one in ten blacks pass our dumbed down Matric (with a pass percentage of 30% in many cases). One in 6000 black grade one learners will pass Matric with both Maths and Science.

Simply put, they are bloody stupid, and they rule us. Furthermore Zoooooma says they will rule us until the second coming. I believe him.

This explains why the ANC have such idiots in their positions of power and influence, the likes of Zuma, Malema, Khomphela and Cele. They are, unfortunately, the best they have! Well, they are the best blacks they have. All the critical positions in government are held by Indians, coloureds or whites, something I am grateful for but which pisses Malema off big time .

Will this last? I doubt it. The black/white polarisation is growing and the rhetoric is becoming more extreme. Listen to the pub or workplace chatter, read the blogs and comments sections of the newspapers and it becomes obvious. Whites are gatvol at the waste, corruption and stupidity of the black elite. Blacks are demanding, as their right, the wealth of the whites by means of redistribution of assets. No matter that they have not worked for those assets, they claim them as the spoils of war.

Just in the past week the Mayor of Pretoria, Malema, a minister and Winnie have gone on record as blaming whites for sabotaging redistribution and exploiting blacks. Malema calls out “Kill the boers for they are rapists” to thunderous applause by university students Four influential ANC opinion makers who are echoing the groundswell of mutterings in the ghettoes. The natives are getting restless.

Things are not going to improve. They cannot, there is no reason to believe our slow slide into a failed state can be reversed with our current regime, and there is no prospect whatsoever of there being a change to governance based on meritocracy. Anyone who believes otherwise, or that the ANC can mend their ways, is living in LaLa land. They do not have the intellect.

Like the proverbial frog in the slowly heating pot we have become inured to the slow collapse of our hospitals, schools, courts, water supplies, roads, civil service and service levels. They will become totally dysfunctional shortly. Inevitably so. Those in charge do not have the mental capacity to organise things.

Our economy and Rand is reliant on short term “hot” funds from overseas that can flee at the touch of a computer button, and probably will if our Rand weakens. Conversely we need a weaker Rand to encourage exports.

6 million taxpayers support 12 million recipients of social grants, and that figure is set to rise this year. The National Health Insurance scheme will happen, no matter how unaffordable. That will push our social grant costs up to four hundred billion Rand. Four hundred billion Rand which produces absolutely no product. Inflation is set to stay and worsen. The consequence of being the biggest socialist state on earth. I do not believe the ANC has the intellect to conceptualise how big a billion is, let alone 400 billion, or what effect this will have on the economy.

You do not believe Malema’s call to nationalise the mines? This guy articulates what the hoi polloi are thinking, but the ANC leadership will not say yet. The tactic is to set the bar high, then lower it and the victims will sigh with relief and say it could have been worse. So perhaps it will not be total nationalisation but rather 51%, a’ la Zim. Just look north for revelation, Zuma does.

Who would have believed that this country would ever be headed by an unschooled, rape accused, adulterous, corrupt, sex obsessed bigot like Zuma. Anything is possible with the ANC.

Summary.

You have few years left to enjoy what is left of the glorious SA lifestyle, especially in the Cape , but understand it is not permanent. The end could be sudden as the tipping point is reached, just as it was sudden for those Zim, Zambian, Mozambican or Angolans whites. It could, conceivably, be as bloody as the Hutu/Tutsi uprising when primitive tribal bloodlust overcomes a thin veneer of inculcated civilisation.

Enjoy it while you can, and enjoy it in the Cape where the population mix is more favourable, but be aware that change is inevitable. Your children must get a world class education, because they will not be adults in SA. Get assets stashed offshore, you and your children will need them there.

Julius Malema's erectile dysfunction

The antics of Julius Malema may be good for a laugh now but they remind me of the early days of Idi Amin. Young JuJu is already allowed to travel in a car with no number plates with no fear of prosecution. He refuses to give answers to the media as to how he acquired such wealth in such a short time and he may even enjoy special status with the Receiver of Revenue. In the face of overwhelming evidence that he's a sleazebag the ruling party remain silent. Perhaps they have their own plans for JuJu but maybe they are quietly chuckling to themselves and saying "that's my boy". If it's the latter then we really are up shit creek without a paddle. We will look back on 2010 not as the year we hosted the FIFA World Cup but as the year the cancer that destroyed the country was first detected and identified. We've had some low lifes before, and many of them from the ANCYL, but Malema's combination of stupidity, greed and arrogance plus his willingness and ability to lie with a straight face make him a man to be feared. We may be chortling at his antics now but we won't be laughing when his goons start kicking in the heads of his political enemies. If JuJu wants something JuJu gets it so there'll be no argument about the nationalisation of the mines whatever JZ may have said to Gordon Brown. It won't be JZ's government any more so it will have been no lie for him to say that "my government have no plans to nationalise the mines". Things change quickly in Africa and a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.

And the media won't fare too well either. JuJu will by that time have declared himself emperor for life and will be throwing huge parties and feeding the likes of Stephen Grootes and Justice Malala to his pet lions and videoing it for YouTube.

If you think Malema is a joke look at his supporters. Are they livid that he has bilked the poor and lives a life of luxury? Of course not. To them he is the man who, along with people like Jimmy Manyi, is finally going to put the whites in their place. These are the chaps whose destiny it is to foment racial hatred. It's only a matter of time before white bank accounts will be frozen and redistributed to the needy. The argument will be typical Malema logic....you can't need the money if you leave it in the bank earning interest. Whites will not be allowed to leave anything to their descendants and white businesses will need to be black owned. No sorry.....my mistake....we already have that one don't we? Rather like the Jews before World War 2, whites will look back and wonder why they never saw it coming. Well they probably did but they were too timid to speak out for fear of being labelled racists.

How Apartheid South Africa was unfairly demonized

The Afrikaner, or Boer, people of South Africa were internationally demonized like no other people in history.

The Afrikaners began to settle in South Africa in the 18th century, fleeing religious persecution in Europe. They established two prosperous states which created job opportunities for blacks, who began pouring in from adjacent areas. The United Kingdom unleashed two devastating wars on them — the Anglo-Boer wars. The British used scorched-land methods and invented the concentration camp, in which 15% of Afrikaners from both republics died.

When Afrikaners finally obtained independence, they understood that only a strong Afrikaner state would prevent further massacres. The Republic thus created was not perfect, granted; the blacks, coloreds and Indians were discriminated against. But the world obsessively focused on the Afrikaners’ errors, leaving no stone unturned in their drive to demonize them.

South Africa was uniquely singled out for criticism. Not a word was said about the enslavement of the Pygmies in the Central African republics, yet the public yelled “Apartheid!” every time an Afrikaner showed up at an international event. The Chinese occupation of Tibet concerned no one, but the South African treatment of nonwhites –who enjoyed freedoms Tibetans could never dream of, either then or now– was severely chastised.

Under the Afrikaners, the blacks enjoyed a standard of life far above that of any other African state. By any measure –infant mortality, literacy, life expectancy, you name it– South African blacks were better off than their neighbors — so much so that the latter began to leave their civil-war torn countries for peaceful South Africa.

But not content with taking advantage of the Afrikaner-created wealth, the blacks began a terroristic campaign by the African National Congress that killed thousands. Where was their Gandhi? They bombed public places, mined roads killing innocent civilians and sabotaged productive infrastructure. Although the government reacted to this, most deaths were caused by black-on-black violence. A particularly barbaric murder method was approved of by the wife of Nelson Mandela — the necklacing, a summary execution carried out by forcing a rubber tire, filled with gasoline, around a victim’s chest and arms, and setting it on fire. This was used against opponents in internecine ANC warfare.

The Afrikaners only wanted peace, which was offered multiple times to the blacks. After being met with ever more terrorism, Afrikaners diesngaged from 20 areas that were designated as black homelands. Each of these territories was offered full independence; four of them took it — Transkei, Venda, Bophuthatswana, and Ciskei. But instead of focusing on building their nations, the blacks continued to resort to terror.

Meanwhile, the international community shunned South Africa — but not Saudi Arabia, a theocracy where converts from Islam face capital punishment; or East Germany, where people who tried to leave the country were shot dead; or Kampuchea, where Pol Pot perpetrated a genocide of more than 1 million people. Only South Africa, where less than 2,000 blacks were killed by a government faced with guerrilla warfare, was subjected to UN sanctions — but not Angola, where civil war killed hundreds of thousands.

International hypocrisy peaked in the 70s and 80s. When the South African rugby team (the Springboks) toured Australia in 1971, the leader of the Labour Party, Gough Whitlam, opposed the tour and declared: “Australians should never let an afternoon’s entertainment blind them to a lifetime’s repression for another nation.” This, said by a politician from a country that dispossessed and mostly exterminated its Aboriginal population. Huge and widespread protest also occurred in New Zealand in 1981 against a Springbok tour — that, in a country that committed cultural genocide against the Maoris, whose language is in a terminal state.

An automatic anti-Afrikaner UN majority recommended several times economic sanctions against South Africa, and third world countries were quick and happy to implement them. Even the US disgraced itself by applying economic sanctions it never imposed on far worse human-rights offenders like Mozambique or the Congo. Of course, none of those countries stopped using South African diamonds or gold, which are key to high-tech industries, or performing heart transplants, an Afrikaner-invented medical procedure.

25 Years After Magoo’s Bar Bombing

On this day 25 years ago in the ANC and Robert McBride’s bomb attack on civilians at Magoo’s Bar on Durban's Marine Parade, three young white women were killed and many bar patrons were wounded when former MK (Umkhonto we Sizwe - the former armed wing of the ANC) operative Robert McBride planted a powerful car bomb outside Magoo's on June 14, 1986

Apart from the three women ‒ Angelique Pattenden, Julie van der Linde and Marchelle Gerand ‒ who died in the bombing, 73 people were wounded in the explosion outside the popular Durban beachfront Magoo's Bar.

In June 1986, McBride taped together more than 100 pounds of explosives, attaching a mine with a 15-minute timer as his trigger, and swaddling this propulsive charge with bags of machine-gun bullets and metal scraps for shrapnel. He secreted his lethal contraption in the spare-wheel well of a powder-blue Ford Cortina, which he parked one Saturday night on a crowded beachfront esplanade in Durban.

The bomber was out of earshot when his device exploded into two busy white bars.
Magoos bar and the nearby "Why Not" bar were targeted because they were believed to be frequented by apartheid security force personnel, who were regarded as legitimate targets in the ANC's armed struggle against the former government. Few, if any, of the victims were members of the security forces.

That was not the first time the ANC had used car bombs and it was not the last time.

McBride and a companion were convicted of the bombing, and McBride was sentenced to execution three times for his part in the attack. A pardon negotiated by Nelson Mandela saved McBride from death row. In 1999 McBride was released and granted amnesty for the Magoo’s Bar terror attack by the TRC due largely to the fact that the ANC claimed it had ordered McBride to attack the pubs, contrary to its initial denials that it was involved in the bombing.

McBride, one of the most famous saboteurs in the furtive military underground of the ANC, then became a diplomat in the new SA government, then was recalled for sexual indiscretions (he sexually abused white female staffers at the Malaysian embassy where he worked). His reward was to be appointed as Police Commissioner for the second largest Urban Metropolitan police force in South Africa... a position from which he was suspended for four years due to a drunk driving charge.

Yet another fine example of a black history maker....

The Constitutional Court recently ruled that 'Bomber' McBride may be called a murderer because of the cold-blooded multiple murders which he committed although he had received amnesty for the incident. But he still stands by the bombing, saying that if he was in the same situation, he would do it again.

So, on this sad anniversary, our thoughts are with the next of kin of those victims who died and the 73 innocent victims who were injured in the deadly blast that night 25 years ago.

The total number of people killed or injured in the 30 years of MK's campaigns is not known exactly. MK launched its first guerrilla attacks against government installations on 16 December 1961 and was subsequently classified as a terrorist organization by the South African government and the United States, and banned. Ten leaders of the ANC were tried for 221 acts of sabotage in the Rivonia Trial.

Details are not available, but it is estimated that the MK High Command co-ordinated over 190 acts of sabotage between October 1961 and July 1963. A study by Tom Lodge of the University of the Witwatersrand estimated that there were 150 MK attacks between 1976 - 1982.

MOB JUSTICE - Innocent Man Bludgeoned to Death

Surrounded by a jeering mob, a 26-year-old Zimbabwean man was bludgeoned to death in Diepsloot, his horrifying final moments captured on a video that thrust South Africa's violence back into the international spotlight. This footage has never been released in South Africa, but made headlines in one of the world’s most influential newspapers.

Farai Kujirichita was still alive when a man in a white cap methodically destroyed his face and skull with a heavy wooden plank. He was probably dead or dying when another man grasped his belt and punched him repeatedly in the groin and a grinning teenage girl raised a large chunk of cement above her head.

His "crime"? - Being Zimbabwean!

His murder in January this year in Diepsloot - a community of 150 000 in northern Johannesburg, where instances of mob violence are commonplace and growing ever more so - was quickly forgotten. It would have remained that way but for a New York Times Magazine cover story last weekend and the grainy cellphone video of his final moments, excerpts from which were published for the first time on the paper's website.

The article appeared just days after UN special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Jorge Bustamante, highlighted xenophobic attacks in South Africa and called on the government to implement more stringent hate crime legislation. The story of Kujirichita's killing made international headlines last week, including in newspapers in Zimbabwe, Taiwan and New Zealand.

In Diepsloot, the killings continued.

Two weeks ago, two Zimbabweans were kicked and beaten to death after being accused of robbery. In another incident, a suspected thief narrowly escaped with his life when police arrived just in time to prevent a mob from killing him.

That's 2 farmers every week! 90% of farms that have been redistributed have failed and are NOT producing any food. My guess is that had the following been written by a white journalist, he would have been sacked from the newspaper. As it is, this is a black reader's letter that appeared in 'The Namibian' on 08 April 2011.

In Namibia, black supporters of the ruling party Swapo and the opposition parties clashed in 2009 and we still hear of such quarrels or violence just in the name of politics. Through studying history, I have come to learn that we actually disliked one another before colonialism, hence fierce tribal fights during those years. Colonialism united us all in the fight against a common enemy and after colonialism, we saw the rebirth of things we thought were buried a long time ago, like tribalism, regionalism, favouritism, etc.

Although we do not like others from other tribes, we all love things that we do not produce. We love fine branded clothes from Europe, we love American and German-made cars, we love expensive wines and whiskeys, yet no African person brews any of them.

All we own, unfortunately, are thousands of shebeens where we drink ourselves to death, stab each other with knives/bottles, infect each other with the HIV virus, make lots of unwanted babies and then blame others for our miseries. We love all sorts of expensive foreign made items and show them off yet we look down at our indigenous products that we fail to commercialise.

As blacks, we know very little about investments, whether in stocks, or in properties. All we know is how to invest our money in things that depreciate or evaporate the fastest like clothes, cars, alcohol and when we are at it, we want the whole world to see us. I know some brothers driving BMWs, yet they sleep on the floors and don’t have beds because nobody will see them anyway.

This is what we love doing and this is the black life, a life of showing off for those who have. A black millionaire tenderpreneur living in Ludwigsdorf or Klein Kuppe in Windhoek will drive to the notorious Eveline Street in Katutura where he will show off his expensive car and look down on others.

We sell our natural resources to Europe for processing, and then buy them back in finished products. What makes us so inferior in our thinking that we only pride ourselves when we have something made by others? What compels us to show off things that we don’t manufacture? Is it the poverty that we allow ourselves to be in? Is it our navigated consciousness, our culture, or just a low self esteem possessing us? For how long are we going to be consumers or users of things we do not produce? Do we like the easy way out, such that we only use and consume things made by others?

Do designer clothes, expensive wines or changing our names to sound more European make us more confident in ourselves?

Our leaders scream at us how bad the Europeans are yet they steal our public money and hide it in European banks. We know how Europeans ransacked Africa but we are scandalously quiet when our own leaders loot our countries and run with briefcases under their arms full of our riches to Europe. The Europeans took our riches to Europe but our African leaders are doing this too.

Mubarak of Egypt, Gadaffi of Libya, Mobutu Sese Seko of the then Zaire, all had their assets allegedly frozen in Europe. Why do our African leaders who claim to love us run to invest ‘their’ money in Europe? Again when they get sick they are quick to be flown to Europe for treatment, yet our relatives die in hospital queues. Don’t our leaders trust the health systems they have created for us all?

Why are we so subservient, so obedient to corruption when committed by our very own people? Nobody can disagree with me that in this country that we are like pets trained to obey the instructions of their masters.

I am sure we look down when we think of our broken lives but what do we see then? I wonder if we realise how we sell our dreams to our leaders for corruption, misery, poverty, unemployment, underdevelopment and all other social evils affecting us.

How long are we going to let our manipulated minds mislead us, from womb to tomb?"

SA politicians return to luxury sleep bunkers until 2014

With votes safely in the bag and no further reason to participate in South African society, politicians from all parties are filing into their luxury underground dormitory-bunkers where they will sleep peacefully until 2014. “So long, suckers!” said one as she slipped into her cryo-tybe and attached a tube to her nose through which she will be fed Johnny Walker Blue Label.

South African politicians are largely nocturnal, appearing briefly for a few nights just before major elections to forage for votes, before disappearing again for another few years.

This year has proved no different, with satisfied political figures seen this morning sleepily picking which pyjamas they will wear and which plush toy they will sleep with until the next elections in 2014.

According to insiders, soothing music is piped into their sleeping chambers and Dire Straits is reportedly a firm favourite.

“That song that goes ‘Money for the nothing and the chicks for free’, that basically sums up being a politician in Mzansi,” yawned ANC backbencher Kikbax Mazibuko.

“The three-year inter-election hyper-sleep is a great chance to dream up future policy,” explained DA MP Deloozhin Naidoo. “Sarafina 2, quiet diplomacy, land reform, Shoot The Boer – all that crazy stuff was dreamt up in the cryo-tube.”

However, said ANC stalwart Stalwart Smallwort, it was sometimes difficult to “shake off the grogginess” after a long sleep, adding that dream and reality could easily blur.

“Take Comrade Julius,” he said. “He’s basically been in REM-sleep since 2007. We don’t shake him or poke him with a knitting-needle because it’s dangerous to wake sleepwalkers.”

Meanwhile many politicians were finding it difficult to go to sleep this year as the excitement of yet another unearned term kept them up past their bed time.

“We’ll give them another five minutes but then it’s lights out,” said ANC Deputy Speaker, Gavel Gumede.

“After all, it is terribly exciting. Imagine you’re in a job you’re not really qualified for and you earn a million bucks a year. For years you do absolutely nothing. Then you get called in by the boss who says you’ve lost three percent of your support-base in the company. But you can keep your job. And you’re getting an inflation-linked raise next year.

“He’s basically employing you for another term to do sweet f*ckall. That pretty much sums up a life in politics. Dude, democracy is the bomb!”

President Jacob ‘The Sandman’ Zuma said he usually went to bed last after telling his politicians a bedtime fairytale.

“The more outlandish and fantastical the better,” smiled Msholozi. “They love The Golden Goose, or as we know it, The Little Taxpayer Who Could; and they also like Helen Zille and the Three Bears, where a stupid white girl steals the resources of three revolutionary woodland animals.”

But, he said, their favourite fairytale was still ‘Together We Can Build Better Communities’.

“It’s just so fantastical that they soon slip away into warm, contented dreamland.”

An open letter to SA’s leadership...

I will try to answer three questions;

1. Which way are we going?
2. Why?
3. Can we find a better way forward?

Apart from racial policy, the institute I head has been documenting almost every aspect of South Africa since our foundation in 1929. It was inevitable then that when the ANC came to power in 1994, people asked us why South Africa should not become just another African disaster.

I gave the usual list of advantages: a greater pool of skills, good infrastructure, a resilient private sector, our strong international economic linkages, a tradition of political pluralism, independent trade unions, a free press, and the vigour of our NGO sector. Since then the country has won golden opinions for macroeconomic policy management, reflected most recently in a heavily oversubscribed 30-year government bond.

Despite this, we now learn almost daily of things that prompt the question once again: are we headed for the list of African failures. Recently an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease occurred because a vital border fence with Mozambique had been neglected.

Such problems are not isolated. We have slipped further down global tables as a destination for mining investment, police behaviour seems to be increasingly lawless, maternal and infant mortality rates are rising, millions of schoolchildren have started another year without textbooks, and the country's commercial capital is run by people who are out of their depth. We also have much higher rates of youth unemployment than countries to the north that recently chased away their rulers.

Specific problems aside, among the main reasons we are going wrong are the following:

•Affirmative action, which has denuded the State of both skills and institutional memory
•Labour laws which protect unionised workers at the expense of the jobless
•The cadre deployment policy, making loyalty to the party a key criterion for appointment to offices of state, and
•Use of a model of government which makes elected institutions more accountable to party headquarters than to voters.

Apart from policies and practices, the problems confronting us arise in part from assumptions and attitudes that affect the policy environment. These include:

•limited understanding of what entrepreneurship requires
•ideological hostility towards business
•poor appreciation of how markets work or even antipathy towards them the belief that the pockets of our small number of major taxpayers are bottomless, and
•too much faith in the efficacy of the State, leading to more and more regulation

To these harmful factors must be added others:

•corruption said by the deputy president to be "worse than anyone imagines"
•lawlessness on the part of the State
•a love of the grandiose, such as new bullet trains to Durban while we can't fix commuter rail services
•the callousness towards ordinary people found all too often in service departments, and
•no accountability even for preventable deaths of mothers and babies in public hospitals

Then there are two key problems in the way policy is made.

One is a habit of putting the cart before the horse - for example, embarking on ambitious education or health schemes without first fixing the basics such as training enough teachers and reversing the decline of public hospitals.

The second is failure to apply the lessons of admitted mistakes. To its credit, the Government has admitted the failings of outcomes-based education but the ANC nevertheless plans to forge ahead with a national health system without considering the State's capacity constraints.

These various aspects of our problems show that we are facing not just a few wrong-headed policies, but a challenge arising from the very nature of the Government and how it runs the State. Most of them have a direct impact on business.

Part of that challenge arises from the fact that the ANC is not a normal political party. When a party with a two-thirds majority in Parliament is still committed to a "national democratic revolution," we must ask what it is that they wish to stage a revolution against. The economic system? Probably. Democracy? Perhaps. The rule of law? Very likely. The Constitution? Possibly.

The Press pays little attention to the national democratic revolution, but the ANC is committed to it. This is one of the risks we face. Another is that tougher affirmative action requirements lead to a drain from the country of the most skilled segment of the population.

Yet another is that public spending gets out of control as the ANC promises more free things to more people and puts more of them on to the public payroll, including now members of Umkhonto we Sizwe. We might also see a more rigid labour market, destructive interventions in agriculture, attenuation of property rights, damage to private health care, more malfeasance with mining licences, further corruption of the criminal justice system, and more local governments collapsing.

It is ironical that we are expanding our social security commitments at the very moment when rich countries are having to cut back. It is also ironical that we are seeking to extend controls of the labour market while Europeans are trying to make their labour markets more flexible.

A further piece of irony is that we are lengthening the arm of the State at the very time when China and India are continuing to liberalise economically, when parts of Africa are liberalising, and when even Cuba is showing signs of liberalisation.

I have painted some dark clouds and the challenge now is to find the silver linings. Like a contrarian investor, we must look for signs of change that may not be obvious. One of these is the very fact that the Europeans, the Chinese, the Indians, and the Cubans have been here before and are having to reverse thrust.

The international context in which we make policy has changed. Africa is also having to pay more attention to good governance than in the past. Already, some African countries are more attractive as mining destinations than we are. If we don't look out, we may find that our lead as the most important economy in Africa is shrinking.

Despite the ANC's close historical ties with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, it was unable in 1994 to follow a communist path because the USSR had in the meantime imploded. As welfare and dirigiste states elsewhere come under pressure, so will the ANC have to recognise that those role models are also unworkable.

Despite this country's achievements since the advent of democracy in 1994, we are pursuing an unworkable political model. This model will have to be abandoned just as communism and apartheid had to be abandoned. How long this will take I do not know. The evolution of liberal democracy can be a slow and difficult business. But we need to find ways of helping the process along, while also trying to minimise the fearful human and economic damage that may be done in the interim.

Among the reasons why apartheid disintegrated, two are relevant today. One is that its contradictions - notably the belief that you could run a modern economy without exploiting the skills of the whole population and granting them political rights - became unsustainable.

The second reason was that, as the policy crumbled under the weight of critical scrutiny and its own contradictions, the ruling elite began to lose faith in it. Disillusionment spread from the Dutch reformed churches, to the Afrikaans Press, to academia, to business, to the ruling party, to the Cabinet, and not least to the Broederbond. This made Mr FW de Klerk's bold actions on 2nd February 1990 both necessary and possible.

Parallels between the last 25 years of National Party rule and the first 15 years of ANC rule are becoming quite striking.

The most obvious is on racial policy. The NP thought it could run a successful economy without fully exploiting the skills of the black population. The ANC thinks it can run a successful state without fully exploiting the skills of the white population. The evidence that this cannot be done is apparent all the time at all levels and in all branches of government. And it is beginning to cause instability at local level and hurt the party.

Unfortunately, however, one of the parallels with our past is that failed policies are sometimes intensified rather than abandoned. This happened with the pass laws, for example, before PW Botha finally repealed them in 1986. It may also happen now with the Employment Equity Act, with its provisions for heavier fines to enforce racial quotas upon all employers - when the Government cannot even get Denel, or Eskom, or SAA, or Transnet to meet its racial targets at management or skilled levels.

But there are other parallels. Just as the National Party steadily lost support among the intelligentsia, the same is happening with the ANC. Some black newspaper editors and journalists are at least as critical of the ANC as their white counterparts. In discussions with black business leaders over the past few months, my Institute has been struck how some of them have become very critical of the government - more so than most of their white counterparts. Moeletsi Mbeki probably speaks for more people than we think.

Some of the squabbles in the ruling tripartite alliance are about spoils and patronage, but others are about policy. There are divisions over whether "decent" jobs should be placed above the need to generate more jobs. A growing minority is beginning to question the deployment policy. Others would like to have a professional civil service instead of one subject to ministerial whim. Racial policies are now also becoming a source of division, as we saw last week with Trevor Manuel's public attack on Jimmy Manyi.

This spat is causing the ANC to tie itself into knots. When my Institute pointed out that forcing employers in the Western Cape to conform to the national racial breakdown would necessitate the (illegal) dismissal of thousands of coloured workers, President Jacob Zuma said companies would have flexibility to conform to national or regional demographics.

This, however, is not what the proposed amendment to the Employment Equity Act says. Now the general secretary of the ANC, Mr Gwede Mantashe, has weighed in to the effect that national companies will have to use national demographics and provincially-based companies provincial demographics. This is the opposite of the flexibility of which Mr Zuma speaks.

In November last year the minister of finance, Mr Pravin Gordhan, told an audience in London that economic empowerment policies designed to improve the standard of living of the black majority after 1994 had not worked. After all the employment equity, labour, and land reform legislation, not to mention hundreds of billions of Rands in BEE deals, this is quite an admission. In the short term it may lead to an intensification of failed policies, but in the long term these policies will have to be abandoned.

The new constitution ushered in democracy in 1994. Ironically, however, the ANC's model of government - based on the Leninist idea of "democratic centralism" - in terms of which party headquarters dictates to local communities whom they must elect - is causing growing dissatisfaction at local level as the municipal election on 18th May approaches.

Though many officials are hostile to white farmers, others recognise that no one else has the expertise to reverse the failures of land reform. Despite antipathy to the private sector, some of the ruling elite see a growing role for it in getting our ports working more efficiently, in electricity generation, in the rescue of local government, in AIDS testing, and in sorting out the problems of further education and training colleges.

Indeed, as the failings of the State become more and more apparent, thanks in part to a critical media, more and more people in government will turn to the private sector for help. Even Cosatu wants private sector involvement to be mobilised when Postbank gets a banking licence.

These inconsistencies will multiply as the ANC continues to pursue mutually contradictory policies. Promises of creating millions of new jobs are incompatible with key components of official policy, among them affirmative action, the deployment strategy, restrictions on immigration, tightening up the labour market, and adding to the regulatory burden on business. Eventually the contradictions will become unsustainable. Either some of these key policies will have to be jettisoned, or the quest for millions more jobs will fall by the wayside.

In the meantime, what do we do? The first thing is to keep exposing the contradictions, so providing arguments for those in the ruling alliance who wish to see more realistic policies. Arguments for the liberalisation of our damaging labour laws need to be refined and intensified. The climate to do this is now more favourable than at any time since 1994.

I suspect that affirmative action and cadre deployment policies have also done more damage to this country than most people care to admit. Can you really run a modern industrial state if you would rather leave posts in the public sector vacant than appoint whites to them? The major victims of this folly have been blacks rather than whites.

The connection between these policies and lost growth and investment, high unemployment, shoddy RDP houses, inability to obtain social grants or medicines, preventable maternal and infant deaths, high crime rates, perilous roads, poisonous rivers, mismanagement of flooded dams, fraudulent passports and IDs, and a great many other problems needs to be repeatedly pointed out.

The ANC's economic objectives simply cannot be achieved while everything is subordinate to racial ideology and the imperatives of the "national democratic revolution". This message needs to be hammered home without reservation or apology until a critical mass of opinion within the ruling alliance comes to recognise it.

Secondly, it is necessary to stand firm in the defence of vital practices and institutions as they come under increasing threat, not only the rule of law but also academic freedom, independent civil society, a free Press, an independent legal profession and prosecution service, and independent courts. It is also necessary that organisations other than business come to the public defence of the free market system, private enterprise, and entrepreneurship.

Not for a second should anyone in the ruling alliance be allowed to forget that the money the Government spends on education, health, housing, child support grants, and everything else - including its lengthening list of promises to its constituents - arises from taxes extracted from the private sector and private individuals.

This is a point that needs much more emphasis than it gets. Business might wish to think of ways of getting the point across more strongly in public as well as to parliamentarians, civil servants, and other members of the ruling alliance.

Thirdly, keep proposing alternatives to present policies. Business may not necessarily see a direct role for itself here, but it is nevertheless essential that alternatives be put forward. Here is my list of a dozen:

1. Cut back on the size of the State
2. Put inspectors back into schools
3. Systematically extend private education
4. Radically redesign land reform
5. Democratise Parliament
6. Liberalise the labour market
7. Make economic growth rather than redistribution the topmost priority
8. Change our welfare state into one that promotes entrepreneurship
9. Direct all state interventions at helping the poorest of the poor regardless of race
10. Replace the deployment system with a professional civil service
11. Increase our global competitiveness as a destination for foreign direct investment
12. Repeal all racially discriminatory laws

Some of these may seem fanciful right now. However, given growing contradictions, policy failures, and paralysis in government, the climate is in fact auspicious. Detailed policy work on alternatives will of course be necessary. But the main point at this stage is to undertake a tenacious campaign to change ideas, preparing the soil, as it were, for new policies to be planted. This will be a long haul and a hard slog, so the sooner it is stepped up the better. The ruling party must be a prime target, both direct and indirect.

Don't forget that ideas predate policies and that their power, for good or ill, should never be underestimated. It was after all, that great incendiary journalist and armchair revolutionary, Karl Marx, who produced some of the most powerful ideas in history. Despite their murderous consequences some of these ideas still have an iron grip in South Africa.

They need constantly to be countered by the ideas that underpin liberal democracy. In particular, we need to keep on propagating the idea that the real alternative to apartheid is not another form of social engineering designed to promote an impossible equality of outcomes but an open society committed to equality before the law, political and economic freedom, corruption-free and proper democratic government, and rising living standards for all.

Social and racial engineers failed in South Africa last time around, and they will fail this time too. That is cause not for despair but for eager anticipation.

Farmer Brutally Murdered, body dragged behind bakkie

North West police have confirmed that a farmer was murdered and his corpse dragged behind his bakkie outside Ottosdal on Saturday night.

According to police : "At about 8pm three suspects entered a 49-year-old farmer's house... They held him at gunpoint while they ransacked the house for money.

"They shot him in the chest, the back, and in the head, then used [the farmer's] bakkie to drag him for about 1.2km before the bakkie rolled."

When police arrived on the scene the farmer's body was still tied to the Toyota LDV which was on the Ottosdal-Delareyville road.

One of the alleged murderers was arrested there and led police to his two accomplices.

It was suspected that some cattle may have been stolen in the attack. Cases of murder, house robbery, theft of motor vehicle, stock theft and illegal firearm possession had been opened against the three arrested men.

‘Shoot The Politician’ to be new hit struggle song

A catchy new struggle song, ‘Shoot the politician’, has been hailed by the 20-million South African voters who get nothing in return for their vote. “If ‘Shoot The Boer’ refers to a struggle against a corrupt anti-democratic system rather than being a call for genocide, then MP’s won’t have a problem if we sing ‘Shoot the politician’,” explained a spokesman. “Ain’t democracy a bitch?”

Meanwhile some white farmers have expressed “slight discomfort” at their taxes being used to pay for Julius Malema’s hate speech defence.

“Call us reactionary counterrevolutionaries,” said farmer Ploeg Spoeg-Kroeg, “but doesn’t it strike anyone else as a bit odd that we’re paying lawyers to defend Julius’s right to call for us to be murdered?”

However, most legal experts have agreed that the song ‘Shoot the Boer’ is not a call for actual murder but a call to arms against the repressive apartheid regime, a verdict that has been welcomed by the writers of the new hit struggle song, ‘Shoot the politician’.

“When we sing, ‘Shoot the politician, blow the corrupt thieving complacent racist motherf*cker away’, we’re actually just calling for greater accountability,” explained songwriter Stratocaster Semenya. “Or maybe we aren’t, but that all depends on what the lawyers say. And how much longer our patience holds out.”

He said that references to specific people were also harmlessly metaphorical.

“The second verse goes, ‘Shoot Sicelo Shiceka, shoot him in the ass with buckshot made of diamonds, then rub wasabi paste onto his perforated ass, then shoot him in the ass again, don’t worry, he’s got medical aid’.

“Obviously in this case he is just a metaphor for all the criminally insane MPs who use taxpayers’ money to visit their girlfriends in Swiss jails. So chill. It’s not a threat.

“Or is it?”

This morning politicians from across the political spectrum reacted angrily to the song, saying that freedom of speech was nice in theory but when it “blundered with its grubby peasant clogs through the hallowed members-only halls of Parliament and threatened those who account to nobody but God, their bank managers and Jacob Zuma – in ascending orders – then it has gone too far”.

“You can’t go around calling for people to be shot,” said backbencher Filibuster Zuma. “Unless you’re referring to Boere. Or criminals. Or cockroaches. And by cockroaches we mean of course political opponents, and we mean ‘shoot’ in a metaphorical sense. Sort of, depending on the context.”

South Africa “the protest capital of the world” - The beginning of the end for the ANC!

As the ANC turns into an aggressive kleptocracy - and confronts an ongoing country wide revolt from poor communities - the politicians have made themselves the enemies of their own people. As one of its members said: “The ANC regards their own people — not the other official political parties — as their true opposition, because they are closer to the pain on the ground.”

The ranting against Boers and ugly women is to take attention away from the multitudes of protesting people whose life is a nightmare under the rainbow-nation mirage. The very convenient return to anti-apartheid songs calling for whites to be shot.. and their harping on ‘struggle songs’ as they were sung in the past, is not a reflection of how attached they are to the struggle, but an attempt to get the people to believe that all they have is remnants of the old order against whom their anger should be vented. In this way, the political elite sidetracks the people from singing about the current dislocation of water and electricity, the ruthless and violent evictions of shack dwellers, the vicious police attack on service delivery protesters, and the kleptomaniac proclivities of the new political and economic elites. They raise race not to confront racism but as a card to render themselves immune from criticism and also to find a slice for themselves in the economic cake. It is a weapon of mass distraction. They want to focus the people on imaginary fights with the Boers while the filthy rich black political and economic elites are involved in equity deals with the stinky rich whites, strolling half-naked with them in exotic beaches and exclusive resorts.

The brutal killing of an unarmed protestor, attacked simultaneously by six policemen - viciously beaten with batons and fired on at close range with rubber bullets.

Tatane was a school teacher, a councilor, a husband and father of one child, a rolemodel in his poor community where he was a volunteer teacher helping learners to improve their marks in Science, Math and Afrikaans. He rescued a helpless old man from being sprayed down by a water cannon. He took his shirt off to draw attention away from the old man, telling the police to rather spray him. The cops then attacked him. Anybody with sense will recognise brutal, excessive force by ill-disciplined cops. The ANC Militia, masquerading as the SAPS, are now clearly and assuredly completely out of control.

Shocking images of the police brutality were broadcast to the nation on television yesterday - they showed an unarmed man being viciously beaten and shot to death by a mob of policemen.

Pictures of the attack on the 33-year-old man by at least six policemen simultaneously, during a service delivery protest at Setsoto, in Ficksburg, eastern Free State, were shown on all SABC news bulletins last night.

The visuals of the chilling and sad scene show how the armed policemen cornered Andries Tatane, striking him with their batons and kicking him in an assault that lasted for a few minutes.

Tatane, from Masaleng township, Ficksburg, is seen holding his hand against his chest after the assault. He collapsed and died before an ambulance arrived.

South Africa is far from what Tunisia was like pre-revolution (for one it is not governed by a one-party police state), but the parallels of small-town cops beating to death (here‘s video footage from the South African state broadcaster SABC news) a South African Everyman because he was angry with poor or non-existent service delivery (water, electricity, roads, housing) is eerily reminiscent of a certain fruit vendor in southern Tunisia. Again, the differences between South Africa and Tunisia are too many to mention. But if you asked someone in Meqheleng (yes, I did look up the largest township in Ficksburg in the Free State Province) if they are as frustrated as your typical Tunisian circa 2010, I wonder what they would say?

Would the ANC’s proper electoral mandate and liberation credentials outweigh the impression that those in power–Jacob Zuma, Tokyo Sexwale, Sicelo Shiceka, and Siphiwe Nyanda, etcetera–are amassing wealth and governing just like Hosni Mubarak and Ben Ali? I worry that a few years from now they won’t care how legitimate the ruling party’s mandate is: poor service delivery is poor service delivery.

You know at least for now in further Tunisia parallels the people of Ficksburg have ratcheted things up a bit.

That leads me this: Does that 18-year old in Meqheleng know the basic dynamics of what is happening in North Africa or the Middle East? Are vernacular radio and local papers giving the “Arab spring” coverage, at least to the point that that 18-year old realizes how crap Mubarak was and, closer to home, how dismissive the ANC leadership has been to their demands the last 17 years, basically the span of his or her entire lifespan?

Trevor Manuel, former finance minister, said in the aftermath of the Paris riots that Cape Town is treading water. Meanwhile, Moeletsi Mbeki, brother of Thabo, drew a picture for the country following the events in Tunisia.

We shouldn’t be surprised when in the absence of meaningful political representation and mediation, the atrophy of social change, and in a context of socially acceptable and government sanctioned accumulation through nepotism, cronyism, and political-connectedness, the structural violence of South African life finds vivid and widespread expression.

“Service delivery” protests (a misnomer if there ever was one), or what passes as xenophobic, domestic, interpersonal violence, wanton brutality on the part of security apparatus, all these are all symptoms of the greater malaise.

He was unarmed and posed no threat to the police. The man was first attacked by a cop with a batton, then he started fighting back... THEN Sky cut the clip in where you see him fighting the cop. They make it look like he was violent to begin with, leaving out the beginning.

Death in Ficksburg shows how we value life

A MAN died this week. He died with his arms clutching his chest, trying to stop the blood spilling out of a gaping bullet hole.

His crime? In a country in which nearly 50% of the people live in poverty and where nearly 50% of black people are unemployed — most of them without the prospect of ever finding a job — he died because he wanted a better deal for his community.

In a country in which miscellaneous items worth hundreds of millions of rand are consumed each year by politicians, where people become instant multimillionaires supposedly providing public goods, goods that rarely materialise, this man died because he wanted his government to do its job.

There is no official finding. Early indications are that he was killed, possibly murdered, by the system that is meant to protect him. He was beaten viciously by a group of police officers. Then he was shot. Probably as he was lying on the ground, hurt and defenceless.

By the the middle of this morning, there had not yet been a statement of sympathy, of outrage, of a call for an investigation, from a member of the Cabinet.

A country with three Nobel Peace Prize laureates, a government ruled by a party once described as having the most genteel armed wing in the world, and this is what we have been reduced to?

The public, vicious deaths of citizens at the hands of the people entrusted with protecting our lives seemingly leaves us cold.

In Andries Tatane’s death we have shown, unequivocally, how we value life in a country with a constitution that is supposed to be the most progressive and enviable in the world.

This is not simply about police brutality. This is about national brutality. The police are simply a reflection of the society we are. It begins with the acceptance of the brutality of poverty and economic injustice.

Former President Thabo Mbeki described SA as a country with two economies, a first economy and a second economy.

Between 70% and 80% of South Africans live in that second economy and it is a place of humiliating and incapacitating poverty.

The overwhelming majority of our country survives on a household income of less than R2500 a month, most will spend between R500 and R1500 a month on accommodation because there is a shortage of pro-poor housing stock.

That is ignoring for a moment that even R1000 will simply get you a makeshift room. These households must then feed, clothe and send their children to school.

These poor people must survive in an economy in which pricing is determined by the need to satisfy the earning expectations of first-world citizens and their price-fixing and where their government has failed to provide functioning public infrastructure.

The poverty in which vast numbers of South Africans live can make places such as Alexandra seem like places of privilege.

We have people who have been on housing lists for more than a decade, many of them the supposed recipients of supposed houses built by people who live it up at bling parties, hobnobbing with the political and business elites of the first world.

Meanwhile, provinces are rushing to outlaw shack settlements.

We seek instead to criminalise the poor for being poor.

They must know their place and sit in the dust bowls that apartheid shipped them out to until the rest of us have eaten.

We cannot have them scarring the vistas of our first economy.

The maladministration and poor governance is tolerated, rewarded even.

The unequivocal message from the reaction to the death of Tatane in Ficksburg is that not only do we do not value the lives of our people, the government has a minimal sense of accountability to its citizens. If it does not care about their lives then how can it possibly care about its duty to them?

This is not simply about poor governance and delivery, it is about economic and social justice. There is something repugnant, for instance, about the ease with which we demonise workers in our battle against inflation, when the problem is multifaceted.

In a country of bread-price fixers, officials who steal from children and pensioners, and crass chauvinistic materialists, the ease with which the working class has become the enemy of the country is a reflection of the society we have become

We can comfort ourselves and tell ourselves that we have a democracy and a constitution and that there will be no violent uprisings in this country.

Yet democracy is not a piece of paper. It functions only if people believe they have a real choice, and many do not think they do.

In that context, the combination of extraordinary inequality, material excess, poor political accountability and responsiveness, and debilitating, brutalising corruption will eventually spread the flames engulfing poor, black SA into our comfortable little first world.

We are becoming tribes at war. We need to find our way back to prioritising an inclusive and just society.

Only a matter of time before the bomb explodes

I can predict when SA’s "Tunisia Day" will arrive. Tunisia Day is when the masses rise against the powers that be, as happened recently in Tunisia. The year will be 2020, give or take a couple of years. The year 2020 is when China estimates that its current minerals-intensive industrialisation phase will be concluded.

For SA, this will mean the African National Congress (ANC) government will have to cut back on social grants, which it uses to placate the black poor and to get their votes. China’s current industrialisation phase has forced up the prices of SA’s minerals, which has enabled the government to finance social welfare programmes.

The ANC inherited a flawed, complex society it barely understood; its tinkerings with it are turning it into an explosive cocktail. The ANC leaders are like a group of children playing with a hand grenade. One day one of them will figure out how to pull out the pin and everyone will be killed.

A famous African liberation movement, the National Liberation Front of Algeria, after tinkering for 30 years, pulled the grenade pin by cancelling an election in 1991 that was won by the opposition Islamic Salvation Front. In the civil war that ensued, 200000 people were killed.

The former British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, once commented that whoever thought that the ANC could rule SA was living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. Why was Thatcher right? In the 16 years of ANC rule, all the symptoms of a government out of its depth have grown worse.

Life expectancy has declined from 65 years to 53 years since the ANC came to power;
In 2007, SA became a net food importer for the first time in its history;
The elimination of agricultural subsidies by the government led to the loss of 600000 farm workers’ jobs and the eviction from the commercial farming sector of about 2,4-million people between 1997 and 2007; and
The ANC stopped controlling the borders, leading to a flood of poor people into SA, which has led to conflicts between SA’s poor and foreign African migrants.

What should the ANC have done, or be doing?

The answer is quite straightforward. When they took control of the government in 1994, ANC leaders should have: identified what SA’s strengths were; identified what SA’s weaknesses were; and decided how to use the strengths to minimise and/or rectify the weaknesses.

A wise government would have persuaded the skilled white and Indian population to devote some of their time — even an hour a week — to train the black and coloured population to raise their skill levels.

What the ANC did instead when it came to power was to identify what its leaders and supporters wanted. It then used SA’s strengths to satisfy the short-term consumption demands of its supporters. In essence, this is what is called black economic empowerment (BEE).

BEE promotes a number of extremely negative socioeconomic trends in our country. It promotes a class of politicians dependent on big business and therefore promotes big business’s interests in the upper echelons of government. Second, BEE promotes an anti-entrepreneurial culture among the black middle class by legitimising an environment of entitlement. Third, affirmative action, a subset of BEE, promotes incompetence and corruption in the public sector by using ruling party allegiance and connections as the criteria for entry and promotion in the public service, instead of having tough public service entry examinations.

Let’s see where BEE, as we know it today, actually comes from. I first came across the concept of BEE from a company, which no longer exists, called Sankor. Sankor was the industrial division of Sanlam and it invented the concept of BEE.

The first purpose of BEE was to create a buffer group among the black political class that would become an ally of big business in SA. This buffer group would use its newfound power as controllers of the government to protect the assets of big business.

The buffer group would also protect the modus operandi of big business and thereby maintain the status quo in which South African business operates. That was the design of the big conglomerates.

Sanlam was soon followed by Anglo American. Sanlam established BEE vehicle Nail; Anglo established Real Africa, Johnnic and so forth. The conglomerates took their marginal assets, and gave them to politically influential black people, with the purpose, in my view, not to transform the economy but to create a black political class that is in alliance with the conglomerates and therefore wants to maintain the status quo of our economy and the way in which it operates.

But what is wrong with protecting SA’s conglomerates?

Well, there are many things wrong with how conglomerates operate and how they have structured our economy.

The economy has a strong built-in dependence on cheap labour;
It has a strong built-in dependence on the exploitation of primary resources;
It is strongly unfavourable to the development of skills in our general population;
It has a strong bias towards importing technology and economic solutions; and
It promotes inequality between citizens by creating a large, marginalised underclass.
Conglomerates are a vehicle, not for creating development in SA but for exploiting natural resources without creating in-depth, inclusive social and economic development, which is what SA needs. That is what is wrong with protecting conglomerates.

The second problem with the formula of BEE is that it does not create entrepreneurs. You are taking political leaders and politically connected people and giving them assets which, in the first instance, they don’t know how to manage. So you are not adding value. You are faced with the threat of undermining value by taking assets from people who were managing them and giving them to people who cannot manage them. BEE thus creates a class of idle rich ANC politicos.

My quarrel with BEE is that what the conglomerates are doing is developing a new culture in SA — not a culture of entrepreneurship, but an entitlement culture, whereby black people who want to go into business think that they should acquire assets free, and that somebody is there to make them rich, rather than that they should build enterprises from the ground.

But we cannot build black companies if what black entrepreneurs look forward to is the distribution of already existing assets from the conglomerates in return for becoming lobbyists for the conglomerates.

The third worrying trend is that the ANC-controlled state has now internalised the BEE model. We are now seeing the state trying to implement the same model that the conglomerates developed.

What is the state distributing? It is distributing jobs to party faithful and social welfare to the poor. This is a recipe for incompetence and corruption, both of which are endemic in SA. This is what explains the service delivery upheavals that are becoming a normal part of our environment.

So what is the correct road SA should be travelling?

We all accept that a socialist model, along the lines of the Soviet Union, is not workable for SA today. The creation of a state-owned economy is not a formula that is an option for SA or for many parts of the world. Therefore, if we want to develop SA instead of shuffling pre-existing wealth, we have to create new entrepreneurs, and we need to support existing entrepreneurs to diversify into new economic sectors.

UN report about unemployment

205 million people were unemployed in 2010 (according to a UN Report) and that number is not expected to improve this year – which leaves global economic growth on the back foot.

Europe, Africa and South America’s labour markets are struggling to recover from the 2008 financial crisis – as people under 25 face youth unemployment rates at a record level of 21 percent.

Here are the 10 most jobless countries:

1. South Africa: 25.3 percent unemployment

The problem: Poor education leading to high youth unemployment. Though the government has tried to create more jobs, one in four people in South Africa is unemployed – and jobs created by government programs only last 4-6 days.

2. Croatia: 18.8 percent unemployment

The problem: The government’s initiatives for job growth have failed – and 141,000 jobs lost in the last 2 years. $13 billion of new infrastructure projects announced by Croatia are expected to combat the problem.

3. Lithuania: 17.8 percent unemployment

The problem: High corporate taxes and large deficit – in effort to control the credit crisis, Lithuania imposed higher corporate taxes which only lead to more companies shutting down.

4. Latvia: 14.3 percent unemployment

The problem: Even lower unemployment rates outside the capitol in the Riga region where unemployment can soar up to 22.3 percent. Their government job programs have been troubled and education budgets cut.

5. Ireland: 13.8 percent unemployment

The problem: Known as the face of EU economic problems, Ireland’s real estate bubble resulted in a banking sector collapse. Unemployment went up by 10 percent and is unlikely to pass due to an exodus of people leaving the country.

6. Slovakia: 12.5 percent unemployment

The problem: Up and raising, the unemployment rate in Slovakia is expected to rise until March, when job market reforms are expected to have kicked in.

7. Greece: 12.4 percent unemployment

The problem: 192,000 people have lost their jobs in October 2009 and he economy shrank in 2010 by 4.2 percent with construction, retail and tourism taking the biggest hit.

8. Poland: 12.3 percent unemployment

The problem: Youth, women and long-term unemployed struggle to find jobs. The country has not been able to control its unemployment rate since it moved on from communism 20 years ago.

9. Colombia: 11.3 percent unemployment

The problem: 2.5 million out of work although financial and natural gas sectors are performing well.

10. Turkey: 11.2 percent unemployment

The problem: Export drops in automotive, linens and textile sectors. Although women’s employment prospects are improving by 0.9 percent (to 28 percent) the year before.

ANC to replace Freedom Charter with Free Stuff Charter

Minister and epic freeloader Sicelo Shiceka has been named by the ANC as the man who will draft a new Free Stuff Charter to replace the Freedom Charter, citing his willingness to “fight oppression to the death even it means he must eat nothing but lobster thermidor”. Meanwhile, the poor have asked Siceka whether he would like his head-basket lined with velvet or silk when he is finally guillotined.

According to the Sunday Times, Shiceka spent R300,000 of taxpayers’ money on a single visit to his girlfriend who is serving time in a Swiss prison, a detail initially thought to be the invention of satirists but confirmed by Swiss authorities who asked the media not to make “insensitive remarks about turf wars between rival gangs of yodellers”.

Shiceka is also said to have spent R700,000 of public money at the One&Only hotel in Cape Town, although it unknown whether he and his colleagues stayed in the standard Quasi-a-la-Modo Faux Florentine suite or splurged for the Mafia Bride penthouse with full Taste Impairment options, including porcelain whippets, paintings of Tuscan painters painting Greek islands, and quotes by Paulo Coelho on the toilet paper.

The revelations have reportedly reinvigorated the ruling party, with many describing Shiceka as the “poster-boy for the new ANC”, and calling for an updated Charter.

“It is this breathtaking capacity to spend other people’s money that makes him the stand-out contender to draft the new Free Stuff Charter,” explained government spokesman Mbezelment Mbete.

He said that the ANC had had problems with the Freedom Charter for some years now.

“The enemy is no longer white oppression,” he explained. “Today the enemy is off-white three-star bed-and-breakfasts that grind our leaders under the jackboot of austerity.”

He added that some of the original Freedom Charter was “just embarrassingly old school”.

“’South Africa belongs to all how live in it’? Seriously? I think if you read the fine print you’ll find that most of South Africa belongs to the Peoples’ Democratic State Organ for the Harvesting of Viable Topsoil, Office 1367, Concrete Tower 7, 103 Concrete Street, Concrete City, Concretia Prefecture, China; and they’ve got the hastily PhotoShopped title deed to prove it.”

Meanwhile South Africa’s 20-million citizens living in abject poverty have suggested to Shiceka that “if he wants to keep saying ‘F*ck you’ to the poor, there are cheaper ways of doing it”.

“For starters, you could just hire a van with a loudspeaker on the top and drive around yelling, ‘Hey fodder, f*ck you!’” suggested spokesman Lesmisrables Afrika. “Or if you really want to insult us, why not just keep promising a better life in return for our votes and then don’t…oh, wait, you’re already doing that.”

However, Afrika said that the poor were not unreasonable and wanted to know whether Shiceka would like his head to fall into basket lined with silk or one lined with velvet when their patience finally ran out and they guillotined the kleptocrats.

“Just asking,” he said.

The £650m Apology - David Cameron buys six new submarines

Its an old saying but Charity really does begin at home. David Cameron would obviously deny that he has just helped Pakistan buy six new submarines with his very generous £650 million hand out of British tax payers money, but that’s what most rational British people are thinking today. Like India there is no doubt that there is poverty in Pakistan , but surely their own Governments should be held responsible for some of it. If they can afford Nuclear weapons and an army navy and air force bigger than the British and splash out on six new Chinese submarines then there is something morally and economically wrong with their country. At a time when the UK is facing the most sever cuts since WWII, Cameron not only angers the whole Country with massive payments to dodgy Governments he actually increases the overseas aid budget. The British Royal Navy is little more than a coastal defence force at the moment and would struggle, to say the least, if Argentina was to try to invade the Falklands again, luckily Argentina is skint as well.

To simplify things I believe we should run our country as we would run our own households. Imagine if you were hard up but managed to save for years for a family trip to Disney land and a week before you are about to go, your father decides that he has donated all of the holiday money to a family down the road who spend most of their time selling and using drugs and committing vandalism including damaging your car and assaulting you sister? Doesn’t make any sense does it, well that’s how angry Cameron is making the ordinary people of Great Britain feel. If Gordon Brown was Prime Minister (remember him) we would not have been surprised at all at these type of decisions, but you would expect better from a so called Conservative Prime Minister. The truth is if their was an election tomorrow he would be toast and Labour would win with a landslide and be in power for the next decade and so the cycle continues. Even if Mickey Mouse himself was in charge of this crumbling Country he would make sure his buddy Pluto and his missus Minnie were living well before splashing the cash on others. If I move overseas, must I shut my mouth?

It seems there is a prevailing opinion that once you have emigrated, you lose your right to read the news in South Africa. And God forbid you dare comment, which has become a popular feature of most news websites. Should you do so, you are frequently met with hostility, ridicule, threats and insults which range from the hilarious to the downright disturbing.

Now, why does one leave a country? Is it because you’re a coward? Is it because it is easy? Is it because it is financially advantageous? Who knows?

Leaving, for me, was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. And I say “had to do”, because I have this very well honed sense of self-preservation. I no longer felt safe in SA. I didn’t like living in a prison called home. The hijackings of cyclists really put me off. Erratic bills from the Joburg City Council and zero recourse (I had to pay R32 000 for a “clearance certificate” on selling the house, promised a refund, nothing six months on), we’ve been victims of crime too many times, crumbling roads, deteriorating water quality (we used to wakeboard on the Vaal river – no more), absurd police force, even more outrageous and absurd “government”. You know all the reasons; having experienced them in person, and increasingly understanding that there was a gaping chasm in my personal moral and ethical makeup and that of South African society, it was clear that getting out was the only option.

Why is it hard? Emigrating is very disruptive. More than that, it is a mountain of admin and paperwork. And it is expensive. It requires commitment, perseverance and nerves of steel. And lots of money.

Once you arrive on the other side, you want to look forward and get on with it. However, if you are someone who likes being informed, plugging in takes time. The political landscape is murky, the issues are almost trivial compared to what we have become accustomed to in SA, the personalities are unknown. And, frankly, the news here lacks entertainment value - it is comparatively boring.

Add to that the fact that no matter who you are, you will have plenty of friends and family in South Africa. If you are like me, you feel strongly about why you had to leave (you’d have to – see the paragraph about why it is hard). When I feel strongly about something, I tend to want to proselytise others into my way of thinking. To me, getting out was a matter of life and death.

So if I think it is in your interests to look at emigration because it might improve your chances of living to be an old coffin dodger, believe me I will try and convince you to do it.

Then there is the issue of confirming to oneself that the right decision has been made (who wouldn’t want to, right?) Well, that’s not difficult, now is it? Look at top stories in SA news right now: TheTimes, News24, Moneyweb, City Press. You get the idea – hell, of course you do, you live there.

And this is before we start digging into the shenanigans of government, you know, Bheki and the lease, Jacob and the 783 charges, Schabir and the “terminal illness”, Nomvula and her now deceased son, Shiceka and the fake degree, Motshekga and whatever the hell she is doing with education, Kgalema and the dodgy deals, the Guptas, Radovan Krejcir, Lolly Jackson, Joey Mabasa, and on and on it goes.

And yes, it is a psychological reality that individuals will seek out information which confirms their world view (and their drastic decisions). It is comforting. There, I admit it.

People, what you are accepting IS NOT NORMAL. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE. None of it. But it becomes the norm and acceptable in SA. You are a part of that society which permits it, like it or not. I am no longer, because I found myself incompatible with that society. Are you compatible with it? Do you like what you are becoming as a consequence of being a member of that society?

Anyway. What are your thoughts? Now that I have left, is reading and commenting on SA news verboten? Should we prevent people from commenting on, say, USA news if they aren’t resident? Should I not share with the world, in this age of social media, the things that I find here which I find strange and wondrous? (You know, like getting your phone line connected in less than two hours, electricity connected in a two minute visit to the power company, having no fence or burglar bars around my house, and, yes, having to do my own dishes and mow the lawn.)

Or should I refrain from comparing, shut the hell up, and let the South Africans I love carry on thinking that they have it the best in the world.

A Promise to the South African Government

Hacktivist group Anonymous has released a video calling on the people of South Africa to rise up and “take their country back” from corrupt and inept rulers.

The video, posted to YouTube on March 18, begins with grainy footage of wind sweeping over Table Mountain, evoking the famous Winds of Change speech by Harold Macmillan which foreshadowed the end of the colonial era.

The now-infamous Anonymous mask breaks in and a computerized female voice begins to list off a set of injustices being done to the people of South Africa; how the country has one of the largest rich-poor gaps in the world while Anglo-American and the Oppenheimer family have gotten wealthy from the country’s mineral resources; how, over the last six years, more people have been murdred in South Africa than in the Iraq War; and how crime runs rampant “while the police are rendered impotent by the very laws that govern South Africa.”

“Throughout all of this, Jacob Zuma and the rest of the South African government are telling the rest of the world that South Africa is a Rainbow Democracy,” Anonymous says.

“How long, people of South Africa, will you allow this to go on?”

“The winds of change are blowing across mother earth and the time is now to take a bold stand against the government because they lost all legitimacy the day the first child was killed under their watch,” Anonymous says.

Anonymous then calls on the people to “take their country back.”

“We are Anonymous and we support you. We are Black and we are White, we are Coloured and we are Indian.”

ANCYL Website Hacked

The website of South Africa’s ANC Youth League (ANCYL) was hacked last Wednesday afternoon, in what some believe is the start of a much larger cyber-war in the country.

Computer news website membrum.com reports the hackers gained administrative access to the site. A fake press release by ANCYL leader Julius Malema announcing his resignation from the political organization because he “had made a fool of [him]self,” among other “essential” reasons, was posted on the front page.

“The hacker then went on to expose the site’s directory structure, systematically deleting core config files (see screenshot below) before — we suspect — a backup was implemented,” membrum reports.

The attack happened hours before Malema was set to give a radio interview on Metro Drive FM. The website of the popular news-talk station was also defaced at the same time.

Although the website was repaired a few hours later, it was still experiencing errors over the next several days.

An examination of the source code of the attack shows someone named “Warbird” was responsible, although it is not known who exactly did it.

Hacktivist group Anonymous posted a video calling on the people of South Africa to overthrow their government on March 18.

Online marketing specialist Rafiq Philips told TimesLIVE, “There are some basic security measures you have to take care of when you build a website, obviously the youth league website was lacking.”

ANCYL spokeswoman Magdelene Moonsamy gave an Orwellian spin on the hacking to IOL News when she said, “There is nothing that we are aware of at this point and there is nothing on our website. “We do not have time for things like this.”

ANCYL spokesman, Floyd Shivambo, slammed down the phone on Times LIVE when they contacted him for comment about the hacking.

With local elections looming we are bound to hear all sorts of nonsense about how the government should be uplifting the “economically disadvantaged” (the current SA euphemism for the poor) and how our finance ministers have failed to deliver to the poor in 17 years of ANC government. Deliver what though? Jobs, free money, hope, food vouchers? Surely that's the old give a hungry man a fish and he'll be hungry again tomorrow argument? What can you possibly give the poor of South Africa that would provide them with more than a faint hope of a better life? The government had the brilliant idea of starting a national lottery which would encourage people to gamble what little money they had on a ticket which could change their lives for ever. Very few lives have been changed.

In between elections the poor get very little mention and there is good reason for that. Firstly, they are not particularly economically active which means that they don't count. Let me give you an African wildlife metaphor. When an impala is born and is found to be weak the rest of the herd don't run around starting action groups with like minded caring impala to protect the weak of the herd. The poor lame hobbling impala is left to fend for itself and it's inability to run faster than other impala of a similar age is just part of the process of natural selection. The lame and the sick end up on the dinner menu of the predators. And it's not all rosy for the predators either. If a lion cannot hunt for himself he is reduced to scrounging the scraps from other lion kills. The chances are that he will be driven away by younger healthier lions and will become thinner and thinner before dropping from sheer starvation and exhaustion and providing food for the vultures. Who said it was a fair world? We are the only species that protect the weak with such enthusiasm and the result has had a substantial effect on the quality of the gene pool.

The second reason the poor don't matter very much in the yawning gaps between elections is that they don't have much money, don't throw great parties and can't chuck the juicy bone of a tender deal to hungry politicians. Julius (Kiddie Amin) Malema may talk about improving the lot of the poor and nationalising the mines so that ordinary South Africans can share in all that wealth underground but we all know this is nothing but political bullshit. Anyway, when has a nationalised industry ever benefited the people (with the exception of oil in Norway)? They usually end up costing the taxpayer a fortune and the reason for that is very simple; politicians don't make good businessmen. No, like most politicians the world over, Julius and his mates want to hang out with the sort of people who can settle the bill for all that Johnnie Blue at the end of the evening. So why waste time on the poor?

If the ANC were really serious about doing something for the poor in South Africa they would start an economic education scheme. This would point out there is no such thing as free money. Money has to be earned and that is the only way most people are able to survive. The gap between rich and poor is no different than the gap between the successful and unsuccessful hunter. The rich are, by definition, smarter, better informed, better connected, more willing to take risks and as a result are more productive members of society. It's no accident that the poor suck life's hind tit....they are always waiting for handouts. If the government, by some miracle, created five million jobs in the next ten years what sort of jobs do you think they would be? Would they provide opportunities for the poor to make serious money and change their family's lives for ever? Or would they be crappy, low paid jobs that would provide just enough to live on? Where's the dignity in that?

If the poor really think that the ANC are there to provide a better life for them then they are probably too dumb to realise that they are nothing but gullible electoral cannon fodder. The chances of things ever changing for these wretched people is zero. If it did the ANC would no longer have a desperate constituency to go to for votes every five years.

Police call for tax boycott as taxpayers become accessories to crime

The police and other corruption-busting organisations have warned South Africans to stop paying tax, saying that citizens are knowingly becoming accessories to crime by funding a shady gang of confidence tricksters, fraudsters, embezzlers and petty thieves known throughout the criminal underworld as “the South African government”.

According to recent estimates, around R100-billion is stolen by corrupt public officials every year, thanks largely to a massive annual heist known to government criminals as “tax season”.

“As far as we can tell there’s a front operation, fairly legit, they’ve got offices and everything,” explained lead investigator Colombo Phiri.

“There’s a big blue sign over the door that says ‘SARS’, and every year during the ‘tax season’ heist they rake in about R350-billion of swag.”

He added that once the loot was safely in SARS’s vaults, the “Government Gang” usually stole between 25 and 30 percent of it, depending on the current price of BMWs, the amount of patronage they needed to buy from regional ANC Youth League commissars, and the number of political opponents they needed to assassinate in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Phiri conceded that up to R100-billion was also being stolen in the private sector every year, but said less fuss was made of this for one major reason.

“The main difference is that citizens are not required by law to hand over 30 percent of their earnings to patently corrupt companies,” he said. “It’s not like you go to jail if you refuse to shop at your friendly neighbourhood arms dealer.”

However, he said, the law was the law and taxpayers who willingly funded organised crime – or extremely disorganised organised crime, as in the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga – could expect no mercy.

“When you fill in that tax return and write that cheque, you know that 30 percent of your money is going straight into the slush fund of some self-entitled mouth-breather with a Grade 9 education and a cousin in the Youth League,” he said.

“Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.”

He added that those who flouted the law by paying tax would be prosecuted, unless prosecutors accidentally shredded and then burnt their dockets after being bought off with tax revenue.

“Do the right thing. Stash your salary under your mattress and if you see anyone who works for the government, from a local councillor right up to cabinet ministers, do not approach them but rather go to a safe place, keeping your money well out of sight, and call the police immediately.”

Why are we spending R800m on aircraft for VIPs when millions of people do not have housing, health and basic services?

Government VIPs will soon be jetting around the country in two luxury jets complete with sleeping quarters, computer and satellite communication services and a conference cabin with space for six people.

The department of defence has leased the jets on a five-year contract to supplement its VIP squadron.

According to a report in Beeld newspaper, the contract with AdoAir, a small Lanseria-based company, is worth R808m.

The company belongs to the Adonai Group, founded by Nigerian businessman Adegboyega Olulade.

AdoAir “came out top” out of five competing tenders, the department spokesperson Ndivhuwo wa ha Mabaya said yesterday. He said an ageing air transport fleet had made it necessary for the South African Air Force to charter flights for VIP air transport, and this had been expensive.

Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu revealed in December that chartered flights for VIPs spiked from R3.6m in 2009 to R16.9m last year.

Mabaya added that the lease agreement also included the maintenance of the luxury jets over the five-year period.

He said: “The two jets will be used by the VIP squadron. Our current fleet of VIP planes are very old and we don’t have the money to buy new planes.”

These jets will also be used when the presidential jet, Inkwazi, is undergoing maintenance. - City Press

Cele and his SAPS criminals vs Jesus and His 12 Apostles

No this is not an April Fools joke

National police chief Bheki Cele has likened the SA Police Service to Jesus Christ and his 12 ~~apostles~~ disciples.

(The term apostle means one who is sent forth as a messenger while a disciple is a follower or a student who learns from a teacher. Is the blundering, loose-tongued, self-styled "general" police ~~clown~~ chief Bheki Cele even aware of the difference?)

He said that if even Jesus and God had criminals in their midst, it was to be expected that there would be criminals in the 193 000-strong police force.

"Jesus Christ had an organisation of 12 people... among those 12 there was a criminal who sat with Jesus every day," Cele was quoted saying at a police cars handover ceremony in Pretoria on Friday.

"Even when Jesus berated him [Judas], he denied that it was him who was a criminal.

"In the Garden of Eden, there were two people. God himself did an inspection every morning. One day, He could not find them. They were hiding, because they had committed a crime," he said.

(Which begs the question what did God do? Did He condone corruption within the organisation? Did He reward the criminals with a promotion, big bonuses, deployment, suspension with full pay? Adam and Eve chose the way of disobedience and were banished from the Garden for one mistake-just one ~~crime~~ sin, no second chances. We all understand choice and consequence. God warned them that if they should eat the fruit of this tree, in the same day they would die. Sure enough, this is what happened. All of creation was subject to death as a result of their choice.)

"If you will find criminals amongst two people, then you will find criminals in an organisation with 193 000 members," Cele said.

Beeld said that in the past seven months, some 254 police members in Gauteng were arrested for alleged involvement in robberies and corruption.

Top cop Richard Mdluli and several of his colleagues were arrested this week for their alleged involvement in a murder that was committed in the late 1990s.

This is not the first biblical comparison used in SA politics.

President Jacob Zuma was criticised a few years ago for saying the African National Congress will rule until Jesus comes.

In 2008, a provincial ANC leader likened Zuma's suffering in the then corruption case against him to what Jesus had gone through.

Bright spark, big-mouth Malema linked to another failed construction project

Reports say that Malema is co-owner of the company SGL Engineering Projects. SGL is said to have been awarded more than 20 contracts, each worth between R500000 and R39-million between 2007 and 2008. Most of these projects came from “cash-strapped” municipalities in Limpopo, some of which claim to be facing dire financial difficulties. Just recently the Limpopo county government requested a ZAR 5 billion loan from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) for such projects.

The new “tenderpreneur” (a newly coined name given to those entrepreneurs who have become stinking rich via the South African Government’s tendering system) could not avoid facing the press who have been hounding him since news of his dubious wealth was recently leaked. When asked by reporters on national television station SABC about the origin of his wealth, Malema avoided all accountability and explanations of his lavish lifestyle and the source of his wealth, meticulously protesting, “I am not accountable to you, I am accountable to the ANCYL and ANC…. There are no laws that says politicians can’t be businessmen. The problem with you [white Africans] is that when an [black] African ~~crook~~ child is emerging and becoming successful, that is when you have a problem. That is your major problem that causes you sleepless nights. You want to see us dying in poverty. That is what you are committed to.” In an earlier interview with reporter from South African alternative television channel e.tv he said, “You cannot audit us… I cannot be audited by you because I have defeated you. I cannot be defeated by people I have defeated.”
The big-mouth public servant also happens to be listed as the director of four companies (SGL, Ever Roaring, Blue Nightingale Trading 61 and 101 Junjus Trading).

Malema linked to 'wrecked' taxi rank

Julius Malema has been linked to another failed construction project – a collapsed R2-million taxi rank in Limpopo.

SGL Engineering Projects, a company that has had at least three municipal projects taken over after non-performance, won the tender to build the R2.1m Apel Cross Taxi Rank in Ga-Masemola, south of Polokwane, in March 2006.

At the time, Malema was listed as a director of SGL. When his link to the company was revealed last year he claimed his signature had been forged and said he was never a director. Malema has since resigned as a director.

City Press has obtained tender documents that the municipality previously told the Public Protector had been lost. The documents showed that SGL had subcontracted the construction of the taxi rank to two companies – Ever Roaring Investments and Moloko Business Enterprises.

Malema was also a director of Ever Roaring at the time.

According to the documents, the contract was split in two – R1.8m for construction and R300 000 to SGL as consulting engineers.

Moloko’s director, Mathews Mathabatha, was one of Malema’s business partners in Ever Roaring.

Malema was a director in Ever Roaring until last June.

City Press has identified the following problems with the project:

- The rank was completed in October 2009, two years after its original deadline of August 2007;
- In March 2008 Moloko and Ever Roaring were kicked off the project because of non-performance and another company had to complete the project;
- The Greater Sekhukhune district municipality had initially refused to sign off on the project as it had questions about the roof’s design, according to a probe by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela;
- Water and electricity have still not been supplied to the taxi rank though it is stipulated in the contract;
- One section of the taxi rank’s roof caved in in October last year, a year after construction was completed, and;
- Minutes of several site meetings held between SGL, contractors, labourers and the project steering committee show that some of the labourers were not paid for up to four months.

Municipal spokesperson Willy Mosoma said part of the roof collapsed due to natural disasters and not through any fault of SGL. However, he could not elaborate on these “natural disasters”.

He said the municipality was working with Eskom to supply electricity and water to the rank.

Mosoma’s version of how the roof collapsed was disputed by the chairperson of the Masemola Local and Long Distance Taxi Association Danie Mohlala, taxi drivers and hawkers, who believed it happened because poor quality materials had been used.

Malema, through his spokesperson, Floyd Shivambu, refused to comment, saying he would not respond to questions from this reporter.

In a recent meeting with City Press editors, Malema “banned” Rampedi from all youth league activities after he’d reported on Malema’s business interests.

SGL project engineer Thomas Mulaudzi and company lawyer Mpoyana Ledwaba acknowledged receipt of questions sent to them but they failed to respond.

City Press revealed last year that SGL had been awarded government tenders worth at least R140m by municipalities in Limpopo.

This rates as a pretty big Boo Boo.

Our local utility supplier ESKOM manged to blow up a 600Mw steam turbine during a routine overspeed test.

They then tried to keep a lid on it by reporting it as a fire during routine maintenance.

A comedy of errors has cost Eskom R3bn and severely compromised South Africa’s supply of electricity. This has emerged after last month’s massive explosion at the Duvha power station outside Witbank, Mpumalanga.

The February 9 explosion ripped through one of the turbines at the power station, causing extensive damage to the station’s infrastructure and immediately removing 600MW from the country’s electricity supply. That amount can power a city the size of Bloemfontein during peak hours.

It has now emerged that human error or lack of personnel caused the explosion, as it happened during a routine check. Eskom is investigating whether the control room at the station was unmanned when all its safety mechanisms failed during a maintenance test on February 9. It appears that there was nobody in the control room to activate the emergency mechanism, which would have shut down the turbine immediately.

“We are worried that such a thing could happen again,” said Dirk Herman of trade union Solidarity. This showed that Eskom’s personnel network could not handle the immense pressure, he said. “Eskom’s investigation into the incident must be broadened to include an audit of the state of the network and the state of Eskom staff,” he said.

'Eksdom blows up a turbine' cover-up lies

It will cost Eskom R3bn to replace the turbine generator that spun out of control and burst during a maintenance test near eMalahleni (Witbank).

But almost worse than the monetary damage is the loss of 600MW in generating capacity for more than a year.

It would take more than a year to replace the unit, said Hillary Joffe, Eskom’s head of communications. Unofficial sources reckoned it could take 18 months before a new unit, which would have to be ordered from and specially manufactured by French suppliers, could be put into operation.

Photographs taken for the purposes of investigation of the damage shortly after the accident have since been widely published on the internet and show that the gigantic unit at Duvha, one of Eskom’s biggest power stations, was irreparably damaged by the explosion.

According to Joffe, an overspeed test on the unit was conducted on the evening of February 9. The turbine generator unit normally spins at 3 000 revolutions a minute when it is linked to the national power grid and the network operated at its normal 50 Hz voltage level. But during the test the unit is disconnected from the national network. A valve controlling an enormous flow of steam to drive the turbine is then gradually opened to raise the pressure of the steam on the turbine. The speed at which the turbine rotates increases as the steam pressure rises. Joffe said the system has a bolt that starts to cut the rotational speed of the turbine as soon as it goes 10% over the design speed of 3 000 revolutions a minute. This time the safety mechanism failed for some other reason. (see below to find out what actually happened at Duhva)

As a result the turbine spun faster and faster. The rotational speed increased too quickly for anything to be done before the enormous machine burst with a tremendous explosion, with debris scattering in all directions. The explosion ripped off several steel plates in the roof of the turbine hall. Pieces of shrapnel made hundreds of holes in the remainder of the 30-metre-high roof. - Sake24

Amazing how pics like these can get out even after Eskom put a blanket of secrecy around the whole incident ... Check out the holes in the roof - it's like a bomb went off - and that boken driveshaft lying on the floor is +-350mm diameter.

ESKOM blows up a turbine - R3Billion later

"So I found out what happened at Duhva.
They were doing a test of the turbine overspeed protection system, and in short, the protection did not kick in. Conventional wisdom tells me that there should be a better way to test a protection system than to try and destroy the turbine and see if it feels like protecting itself, but that’s basically what they did.
The turbine has a governor valve which controls the amount of steam coming into the turbine in order to keep it running at the right speed (3000 rpm for our grid frequency) and then it has a main isolation valve to shut the steam off completely. The protections systems (of which there are 3 independent systems, and a dude with his finger on the emergency button) are supposed to close this main isolation valve in a fraction of a second when the turbine overspeeds.
So they get ready for the test, they dump a helluva lot of steam onto the turbine, speed starts going crazy, it went from 3000 RPM to 4500 RMP in ten seconds (they are generally only designed for 10 to 15% overspeed, all three protection systems should have kicked in by the time you get to 110%). Anyway, all three systems failed, and the dude with his finger on the manual trip button wasn’t at his post. So the result was a big bang, some fire and a lot of steam going where it shouldn’t go.
Scary thing is Duvha has a shared turbine hall. All six units are placed in one long straight stripe, with no missile shield between them. And if you look at the third last pic you can see how big that shaft is, if that landed on another turbine it would have destroyed that too. They are very lucky they didn’t lose the entire station.
So anyway, what gets reported in the news? “Unforeseen maintenance” at one of the units at Duvha requires it to remain shut down for 18 months. Understatement of the century in my book. But you shut off the containment ventilation system at Koeberg for one hour and a radiation alarm goes off, then it’s a front page news national crisis. I give up."

No looting in Japan

The contrast with what happened after the Haiti earthquake last January or Hurricane Katrina in 2005 could not be more stark. In both cases, there was an almost immediate descent into savagery, with police officers joining in the looting. In New Orleans, evacuation centers became nightmares of violence and lawlessness, and the National Guard had to carry weapons on relief missions. In Haiti, tent cities for the quake victims became scenes of mass rape.

The CNN news blog story quotes two American “experts” on why the Japanese are so well behaved. Gregory Pflugfelder of Columbia University says it is because, unlike Americans, Japanese are not individualistic and care about the group. Merry White of Boston University says Americans loot and riot because of frustration over “alienation and class gaps.”

Wrong. Incapable, as usual, of considering race, they cannot see that the greatest advantage the Japanese have is that they are not black. It is impossible—and I mean impossible—to imagine any black population anywhere in the world behaving like the Japanese.

It is not just blacks. What if a catastrophe struck in Mexico or Indonesia or India or Egypt or Colombia? There would be widespread looting. Native relief agencies would make huge profits selling donated supplies rather than giving them away. Americans or Europeans who showed up with trucks of food would be mobbed. Human vileness would make the calamity vastly worse for the survivors.

Prof. White says the real question is why Americans loot, not why the Japanese don’t. Wrong again. Virtually all people loot if the forces of order are knocked out, and it has nothing to do with “individualism” or “alienation and class gaps.” That is their nature.

The “experts” are also wrong to talk about “Americans” as if there were only one kind. Everyone knows that if the lights go out there will be trouble in Detroit but not in Portland, and everyone knows why: Detroit is black and Portland is white. There would be trouble in Los Angeles, too. After the verdict in the Rodney King beating case, just as many Hispanics as blacks rioted.

Would an all-white population behave exactly like the Japanese? There might be a bit of looting and profiteering, but not much. Most whites would help their neighbors, stand in line, wait their turn. And they would probably deal harshly with looters.

Before they accepted millions of non-white immigrants, Northern Europeans would have behaved much like the Japanese. Swedes, Scots, Dutchmen, Germans, Danes—wherever they are still undiluted by immigrants they can be counted on to show courage, restraint, and dignity.

But again, these peoples are exceptions. They are exceptions for reasons that are largely genetic but also cultural. Whites and north Asians have high average IQs, but also what could be called an “average personality” that is less psychopathic, more disciplined, more public spirited. We see this in every aspect of the societies they build, not just in how they respond to tragedy. Their societies have little crime, illegitimacy, littering, or graffiti. They have high levels of public order, trust, and courtesy.

Only a few populations are capable of building such societies, and they are vastly superior to all others. That, of course, is why so many people from failed societies want to immigrate, but when they come in sufficient numbers they destroy what they came to find.

Things would have been far different in Japan if the country had admitted large numbers of, say, Malays or Pakistanis. So far, Japan has wisely limited Third-World immigration, and can face a catastrophe with the conviction that all Japanese are united both in suffering and in the struggle to rebuild. Japan is far better prepared to face calamity than America or Europe because Japan has had the wisdom to remain Japanese.

Haiti Earthquake: 1 year later...

Haiti's quake recovery progress is 'at a standstill.' The Presidential Palace, still looks like it did right after the quake hit a year ago. The top photo shows it today and the bottom one is from Jan. 13, 2010. It's not clear when or if it will be rebuilt. The palace now stands as a symbol of how little Haiti has changed in a year.

More than one year after the January 12, 2010 earthquake, the streets of Haiti still show the damage of the disaster, despite the outpouring of aid that followed the quake. Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince remains in ruins. Rubble has not been removed. Many businesses, homes and churches, including the Cathedral of Port-au-Prince, remain buried in rubble, and have come to symbolize precisely how little progress has been made towards reconstruction country-wide. Nearly 1 million people still live in makeshift shelters and temporary encampments. Unsanitary conditions, crime, exposure to harsh weather, joblessness and uncertainty remain the reality for most people.

Demographers predict that the intelligent, informed and refined in every race and nation will slowly produce fewer and fewer offspring, leaving society’s most brutish and pointless members to procreate unabated. It will take time, but eventually these unlovely creatures will eclipse the rest at which point, if Julius Malema were still around he might finally have a constituency worthy of him.

At a gala dinner in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, at the weekend, ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema seized the opportunity to exhort black South Africans to have more babies.

Malema urged a full hall in the Ehlanzeni municipal administration building to have as many babies as possible—“to prevent the revolution from losing steam”.

“Having babies is a revolutionary thing. You must reproduce! If you shame a black man about his large family, you should immediately change your attitude,” Malema said.

Malema wants a 60% slice of Anglo's 'delicious cake'

At the same event, Malema was reported to have called for the nationalisation of 60% of Anglo American.

“What Anglo does with the other 40% is their business,” he told the assembled audience on Friday.

He predicted that the nationalisation of mines would “happen in my lifetime”.

City Press reported that Malema was in fine form, “spitting fire” at companies controlled by whites that did not share enough of their wealth with blacks.

“Share that delicious piece of cake,” he said to loud applause. “Don’t eat it all alone!”
Malema said unemployment was the cause of recent political unrest, and nationalisation was the only way to solve it.

“Maybe it is time for the youth to climb into the driving seat of the car,” he said.

He did not advocate taking over all white businesses: “We just want a fair share. If we don’t do it (nationalisation), we will always stay poor. The Oppenheimers don’t need to worry because we only want 60% of Anglo American’s money.”

Malema said Anglo American had agreed to give 51% of its mining interests to black people in Botswana. “We can’t understand why they don’t want to do it in South Africa. They think black people are idiots and they abuse us in South Africa.”

Any black man who did not agree with the ANC on this was “under the influence of capitalists”, he said.

“An uprising is coming to South Africa and the uprising will not be against the ANC,” he said to screaming and cheering ANC members.

“The uprising will target white men and white monopolies. It won’t be aimed at white women.”

MPs GUN for SAPS top brass

Embattled national Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele and his top brass have been warned by MPs that lying to Parliament was a criminal offence as the department was grilled on its chaotic firearm controls.

MPs came out guns blazing against police bigwigs for claiming, during previous committee meetings, that their management of firearms was under control. This followed a senior SAPS commissioner admission that there was really no system in place to monitor and safeguard firearms.

Cele was not present during Tuesday’s meeting with the National Assembly committee on police. Chairwoman Sindi Chikunga said he had excused himself.

Commissioner for visible policing at the SAPS, Joel Mothiba, said: “We really don’t have control of the environment (firearm controls) … we must point out that we do not have a system.”

In response, angry MPs accused the police management of lying to them during previous meetings.

ANC MP Annelize van Wyk said the committee’s patience with the department was wearing thin as it was not the first time information that had been provided was questioned and earlier statements disputed.

“It’s a criminal offence to lie to Parliament. There will come a time when this committee has had enough of these half-truths.”

DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard said: “The absolute top structure (of SAPS) had sworn to us on stacks of Bibles that a system was in place. Now you mean there’s no system?

“Why have we been listening to top structure saying everything (was under control) … I don’t know how you even manage to apprehend criminals. I’m absolutely gob-smacked,” Kohler Barnard said.

The SAPS on Tuesday presented its report on the safeguarding of firearms to the committee.

Over the past seven years, 20 429 firearms were reported lost despite 12 control measures put in place. To date, the SAPS has recovered 4 810 of the guns and no steps have been taken against any officers.

The department has 264 845 firearms.

On the report, Chikunga said: “The report today, if you look at it and really think about it, it’s somewhat a fatal report.”

Members expressed their concern about the statistics in the report because the national department had relied on the provinces to provide the numbers, with very few actual inspections of police stations.

Van Wyk said, if the figures relied on information from the provinces, “I can say without a doubt that they are wrong”.

Earlier, SAPS divisional commissioner of supply chain management Gary Kruser said he had only been notified of the meeting the day before the department was scheduled to appear before the committee.

“So we had to put the presentation together in a rush.”

Chikunga took issue with this, saying the SAPS had been handed the committee’s schedule in October.

“It’s surprising that only yesterday people were told. I’m not sure what this means … I have a problem with the document being prepared one day before the meeting. Even if the national commissioner (Cele) could not come he should have prepared the people who came. (That it was) only prepared yesterday talks to the disorganisation on that level.” - Political Bureau

The African National Congress is in a furious huff because Moeletsi Mbeki posited that a Tunisia-style revolt could happen in South Africa

The Tunisian Revolt - is it contagious?

As the flames of revolution and dissent spread from Tunisia across the Maghreb and into the Middle East it is natural for everybody to take a look at their own countries and wonder whether or not they are next. Bahrain, Jordan, Yemen, Algeria, Libya and even parts of Iraq have seen uprisings. There are tremendous rumblings in Iran and Saudi Arabia. No country, it seems, is safe. The question of “who is next” has sprung up as far afield as England (struggling painfully with a buckled welfare state) and America.

As the people of Ermelo and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union took to the streets, even as the memory of last year’s public servant’s strike and the riots in Mpumalanga lingers – it seems natural to consider the likelihood of revolution in South Africa. Political analyst Moeletsi Mbeki reckons it will be around 2020, when the industrialisation phase that China is undergoing ends. A slowdown in Chinese industrialisation will lead to a drop in demand for Africa’s commodities, leading to a drop in prices, which will eat into the GDP of commodity-rich countries like South Africa. At that point, South Africa’s welfare state will collapse and the poor will revolt against a government that is no longer able to feed them, predicts Mbeki.

The ANC is not amused in the least by this. ANC spokesman Brian Sokutu told BusinessDay, “Our fledgling constitutional democracy, which continues to make inroads in redressing decades of apartheid, cannot be equated with tyranny or stagnation in our growing economy, as Moeletsi insinuates.”

The peanut gallery also had something to say. The ANC Youth League issued a statement of its own, saying, “The Tunisia-like protests will not happen in South Africa, because the ANC government has made profound progress in placing institutions, structures and virtues of democracy, which allow the people of South Africa to freely and fairly choose public representatives after every five years.

“Besides entrenched democracy in South Africa, the ANC government is at the forefront of the attack in the battle against poverty, unemployment and starvation. The ANC government has since 1994 provided basic services to the people of South Africa, including water, electricity, sanitation, houses, roads, access to free education, healthcare, safety and security and many other basic social services needed for sustainable livelihoods,” the ANCYL statement said.

Which is completely beside the point. Moeletsi Mbeki was referring to the fact that the ANC is using the welfare state to keep the poor at bay, not insinuating that we don’t have free and fair elections in South Africa, or a police force which kicks down dissidents’ doors at night. “People don’t eat democracy,” Mbeki is reported to have retorted.

But since Mbeki raises several important points, which the ANC has so spectacularly failed to address, it is worth exploring the matter a bit. The government has been able to provide people with critical resources because of an erstwhile booming economy, aided greatly by high commodity prices. But it has largely failed to diversify the economy and, should the massive commodity price slump occur in 2020, we will be in serious trouble. In all likelihood the welfare state would collapse.

But at no point in his analysis does Mbeki allude to the fact that South Africa, unlike Tunisia or Egypt, is actually a democracy where people get to vote out the parties they don’t like.

We are seeing the trend towards that today. The ANC has already lost Western Cape. The people did not revolt there, they simply voted for another party. Its time to remind people that they need to go out on 18 May and Vote. It's our chance to end high unemployment, corruption, rising prices and, and ... Do it at the ballot box!

If we purchase useless crap, it will go to Taiwan and none of it will help the South African economy.

The only way to keep that money here at home is to spend it on prostitutes and beer, since these are the only products still produced in SA.

A victim of violent crime at the hands of criminals, again

Less than 5 months later, gunmen struck again. This 72 year old pensioner was critically injured as she fought off four armed men who attacked her in the kitchen of their Bryanston home. It came five months after she was followed in her car while driving home one night when she and her husband were attacked and beaten in their driveway as she arrived home.

A hit for money.

This 72 year old elderly woman was again badly injured and had to be taken to hospital after a black armed gang of house robbers broke into their home in Bryanston, Johannesburg, on Saturday evening, 12 February, while she was preparing dinner in the kitchen. Her assailant’s raced off after her husband, who was in the bedroom, heard her screams for help and fired a shot at the robbers.

State plans to control job market

Proposed law could see state recruiting the jobless

IF THE GOVERNMENT has its way, private companies will no longer be able to hire employees without going through a government database of unemployed South Africans.

Failure to do so could result in heavy fines for companies that don’t comply.

This is according to the Employment Services Bill, gazetted in December.

According to the bill, the government intends to establish a public employment service whose task would be to create a database of all unemployed people in the country.

The employment service would then link job seekers to companies that have vacancies.

The bill also stipulates that various employers would have to register all their vacancies with the public employment service within 14 days.

The government would then be expected to provide those companies with the names of possible candidates to fill those posts. If these companies failed to meet the requirements, they would need to provide written reasons for not appointing candidates from the database.

The bill also proposes conditional employment of foreigners. If a company employs a foreigner, it would have to prove to the public employment service that it was unable to find a suitable local candidate.

The government has also vowed to deal with recruitment agencies that charge a fee to job seekers. It has proposed that all agencies be registered or face punitive measures for failing to do so. They also want agencies to charge employers instead.

In addition, the bill provides for temporary workers to be paid at the same rate as permanent workers.

Labour law expert Johan Botes, of the law firm Cliffe Decker Hofmeyer, slammed the proposed bill.

He said it was aimed at allowing the government to run the affairs of the private sector.

“The government must allow the business sector to run its affairs while they continue to govern the country,” he said.

Government departments in South Africa were notoriously inefficient and the labour department was a prime example of poor service delivery. The current employment assistance offered by the department, namely the Employment Services South Africa (ESSA) project, a grossly under-utilised system seldom used by the private sector, was a case in point.

Black rule sucks

'Is South Africa doomed to follow the rest of Africa into oblivion?' The tragic fact of business is that ordinary Africans were better off under colonial -- i.e. White -- rule.

South Africa and Zimbabwe hold powerful racial lessons for all Europeans. Even though both countries are mostly-Black, they used to be run by Whites.

In fact, quite a few areas in Africa were controlled by Whites at one time or another, due to British or French rule by colonization of various parts of the world, back when those White countries had vast "empires."

Britain had colonized such African countries as Botswana, Rhodesia, Zambia, Gambia, Kenya, Mauritius, etc. The French colonized Chad, Niger, Senegal, Guinea, and so forth. Other formerly White-ruled/controlled countries in Africa include the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, Tanganyika [later called Tanzania], Uganda, Malawi, and Swaziland. All of those countries are now in Black hands, and all of them are now physical toilets.

When Whites were in control of those Black-majority countries, those countries were successful, even if some of those states lacked certain resources. But as soon as Whites stopped ruling those countries, they quickly became hellholes of poverty, crime and disease.

In fact, even non-African Black countries share that above racial feature: consider the Black, Caribbean country called Haiti. Haiti was built up by Whites -- the French -- back when it was called "Saint Domingue"; then, that country became "the Republic of Haiti," and after that just plain "Haiti." American military personnel were in Haiti for 19 years, to aid that country, up until 1934. But as soon as the Whites left, Haiti plunged into a cultural sewer, where it remains today.

But regardless of the country in question, the pattern is always the same: Whites build up, Blacks tear down. Over and over again. Without fail.

Whites themselves cut their own throats in South Africa in Dec. 1993, when the South African Parliament voted in a new constitution, giving "equal rights" to all Blacks, and ending apartheid - White rule over Blacks. The former White leader of South Africa, F. W. de Klerk, also helpfully aided the collective mass suicide of Whites when he lifted the 30-year ban on Black revolutionary groups like the African National Congress.

South Africa's Black hero/leader, Nelson Mandela, whom the global media praised as the second coming of Ghandi, or of Martin Luther King, Jr., was actually a convicted terrorist, jailed in 1964 for conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, to which he pled guilty. Mandela was the leader of the Marxist ANC -- African National Congress; he once wrote a pamphlet titled "How To Be A Good Communist," which was used as evidence in his criminal trial.

Later, during his prison term, the Whites offered to free Mandela if he would recant violence, and his Marxist beliefs. He refused.

Mandela -- again, a former Communist -- later received the Nobel Peace Prize, shared jointly with F. W. de Klerk. Amazingly, few people complained about Mandela getting such an award.

Also of interest concerning Nelson Mandela is his wife, Winnie. She was caught on videotape endorsing the terrorist tactic of "necklacing"; she was also suspected of murdering -- stabbing -- a young Black, and was later convicted in 1991 -- but not of murder, only of kidnapping and assault; her bodyguard was charged with that murder. Despite this conviction, Winnie Mandela later became the head of the ANC Women's League.

Rhodesia's -- now called Zimbabwe -- situation is similar to South Africa's. It was a British colony, named after Cecil Rhodes, and was a White, anti-Communist state until its takeover by Black Communist leader Robert Mugabe in February 1980. This takeover by Mugabe occurred partly due to U.N.-imposed sanctions on Rhodesia simply because Rhodesia was too White for the tastes of that global organization.

We must hope that all Whites will learn a lesson from this so-obvious racial pattern above. Blacks have proven themselves to be incapable of running a successful country anywhere on Earth -- even after Whites do most of the leg-work on infrastructure and agriculture prior to a Black government.

War on white South Africa

South Africa is in a 17 year massacre hidden from the western world by its liberal media. The fact is more people die in ten weeks under Mandela’s SA than died in detention over 40 years of white rule. The farm murders are only a tip of a blood spattered iceberg. Each year hundreds of urban whites are also murdered and many more are the victims of horrific violence motivated by racial hatred and deliberate genocide.The farm genocide is merely scratching the surface of South Africa's blood stained reality. The frightening truth is that the farm killings are only a part of what is actually going on. More terrifying still is the fact that today's reality may no more than hint at the nightmare which is to come.

The malpracticing media is discovering (painfully slowly) what the prototypical Black Strongman is all about.

Eugene Terre'Blanche, leader of the Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) that seeks the establishment of a homeland for the Afrikaners of South Africa, was alone at his homestead over the Easter period, when two farmhands bludgeoned the 69-year-old separatist to a pulp with pangas and pipes. Based on hearsay – and their abiding sympathy for savages – news media across the West are insisting that the motive for the murder was a "labor dispute."

This the oleaginous officials of the African National Congress (Mandela's gang) must just love; they share with their admirers in the West a determination to ignore (and perhaps to encourage) the black onslaught against white South African farmers, or Boers (who happen to feed the continent).

Those of us who've been studying the systematic, race-based extermination of farming South Africa know too well the telltale signs of a farm murder. Without exception, Mr. Terre'Blanche and all 3,769 farmers murdered since "freedom" were slaughtered in ways that would do Shaka Zulu proud.

The brutality of the racially motivated murders of white farmers in South Africa, and, increasingly, of whites in general, is one aspect of these crimes. Mr. Terre'Blanche was unrecognizable. Two weeks before he was slaughtered, 17-year-old Anika Smit was raped, her throat slashed 16 times and her hands hacked off and removed from the scene.

Both acts of butchery were unremarkable in Mandela's South Africa.

The dehumanization of the victim – Crimen injuria in South African law – is another feature of these feral acts. When they were finished with him, Terre'Blanche's killers pulled down the old man's pants, exposing his privates. Slain white farmers are often displayed like trophies by their black killers.

Mr. Terre'Blanche was a victim of a farm murder, plain and simple.

Afrikaner farmers are being exterminated at the genocidal annual rate of 313 per 100,000 inhabitants. Or, in the estimation of Dr. Gregory H. Stanton, who heads "Genocide Watch," "four times as high as is for the rest of the population," making farming in South Africa the most dangerous occupation in the world. (Miners, by comparison, suffer 27.8 fatalities per 100,000 workers.)

Mr. Terre'Blanche's killers, who crept up on him in his sleep, were being hailed as heroes by black groups outside the Ventersdorp courthouse in which they appeared (in a part of South Africa now known as the North West Province) and beyond. Just in case her readers forgot who here was on the side of the angels, the Associated Press' pack animal Michelle Faul gave them a history lesson peppered with politically correct pieties. She wrote:

"Blacks outside the courthouse were singing … songs from the struggle for majority rule that finally came in 1994 after years of state-sponsored violence by the white minority regime and urban guerrilla warfare waged by the African National Congress."

As Ms. Faul tells it, the white crowd, there to protest (gasp) the slaying of Mr. Terre'Blanche, was singing (horrors) "the apartheid-era anthem in the Afrikaans language."

As hard as it is for stupid Westerners to believe, there was life before black majority rule. The white minority settled the tip of the African continent around the same time Americans settled there's. Like their American coreligionists, the puritans of South Africa built the country currently being dismantled by the black majority. And, lo – they had a national life and an anthem: "Die Stem."

Here's a verse of that old "hate speech":

In the golden warmth of summer,
In the chill of winter's air,
In the surging life of springtime,
In the autumn of despair;
When the wedding bells are chiming,
Or when those we love depart,
Thou dost know us for thy children
And dost take us to thy heart.
Loudly peals the answering chorus;
We are thine, and we shall stand,
Be it life or death, to answer
Thy call, beloved land.

"Die Stem" is a paean to God and country, and rather beautiful at that.

Western journalists hunt in packs. The AP is only aping the ANC, according to which the old anthem is unsavory. Not so the hit jingle, "Kill The Boer; Kill the Farmer." For it, says the ANC, does no more than pay homage to the Party's illustrious history. (Agreed: Incitement to murder is a fitting ANC anthem.)

In the "New South Africa," there is indeed a renewed appreciation for this old slogan, chanted at political rallies and funerals during "The Struggle" (against apartheid). The riff has been revived by ANC Youth League President Julius Malema, who stomps around the country calling for Boer scalps at every opportunity. (Malema has lived most of his life under black rule.)

Variants of the hit "Kill the Boer" have hit the social networking site Facebook. At the time Anika was taken, the country had been embroiled in a debate about posts that appeared under the name of Malema. One entry called on "fellow black people" to "take [their] land," and "rape every trespasser, namely white whores … till the last breath is out. … White kids will be burned, especially those in Pretoria and Vrystaat."

Anika, an Afrikaner, was from Pretoria.

Popularized by Mandela's men, and sung by The Man himself, the AP considers an exhortation to kill whites nothing but an "anti-apartheid song" with Liberation lyrics.

Mantras and chants have a mesmerizing, often murderous, power in African life. The West's malpracticing and mindless liberal media have forgotten this.

In its hypnotic hold on the popular imagination, "Kill the Boer; Kill the Farmer" is not unlike the "Kill them before they kill you" catch phrase that helped excite Hutus to massacre half a million of their Tutsi neighbors, whom they had dehumanized first by dubbing as "inyenzi" ("cockroaches").

Of course, banning an incitement to murder will do nothing to excise a dark reality embedded deep in the human heart.

Acid Mine Drainage – is this the end of life in Gauteng?

It's taken the government 14 years to take the issue of AMD (acid mine drainage) seriously and focus on finding practical solutions – and even to acknowledge the importance of enforcing compliance and regular inspection! What is lacking is the political will and commitment to implement plans and apportion liability. AMD on the Witwatersrand has now reached a crisis point.

While South Africans are witnessing the “catastrophe”, the government committees are debating the water crisis in boardrooms, and nothing has been done to prevent the decanting of acid mine water. The first AMD (acid mine drainage) decant that occurred on the West Rand in 2002, was predicted in 1996. When will the department of water affairs recognise the situation for what it is – a pending disaster! Decisive action has become imperative as acidic mine water has now reached the Cradle of Humankind from the West Rand.

In July 2010 the department stated that potential decant within the Johannesburg area could take place within 18 months, or by early 2012. Those 18 months had now shrunk to 12 months.

It is all very well that the inter-ministerial committee appointed by the department of water affairs to investigate, completed its work, but besides the announcement of a report of which the findings were never made public, we have heard nothing further.

Due to governments delays in dealing with AMD and given the huge volumes of AMD currently decanting, inadequate treatment methods (i.e. neutralisation) may have to be implemented in the short term – at the expense of our environment, health and economy! The threats are massive: Not only our water, but our health and food security is compromised. It is worrying that instead of scientific research and engineering, Ministers are calling for simplistic and quick solutions. Acid mine drainage is the most significant environmental threat facing South Africa and is going to take billions of Rands and will involve all sectors of society for many decades, if not centuries, to come.. We wait with bated breath to hear what Cabinet determines is the way forward!

For the record: A serious case of insufficient funds again! Government lacks the R1.5-billion needed for a 10-year rehabilitation plan. Just one pump to remove the water costs R218-million, but the current budget for this is R14-million. Which begs the question - Was the multibillion-rand Arms Deal, the R40-billion World Cup Soccer, the R21-billion Gauteng Freeway system or Cuba's R1.1-billion freebie a life and death situation? And what of our Disney World that is expected to cost R25-billion? Or is this #101 failure of government where self-help is the order of the day - 'Water is Life' - do you think this may have dawned on anyone in government?

Radioactive Pollution Acid Mine Water reaches Cradle of Mankind

Acidic mine water that has been bubbling out of an old ventilation shaft on the West Rand for the past year has now reached the Cradle of Mankind and caused the deaths of over 60 carp in a dam.

This stream runs from the Tweelopiespruit, which springs from the radioactive Robinson lake outside Randfontein. From here it runs through the Krugersdorp game reserve, "over" the Sterkfontein Caves, right through the Cradle of Mankind up to the Crocodile River, which runs into the Hartbeespoort Dam.

Neil Norquoy from Wild Cave Adventures found the dead fish on the farm Koelenhof on Thursday.

The farm is about 10km northeast of the place where millions of litres of acidic mine water has been leaking on the West Rand since last year.

The dam is situated about 3km northeast of the Sterkfontein Caves.

The pollution had spread from the old Rand Uranium goldmine on the West Rand and has now spread north to within the Cradle of Mankind.

At this stage, it has already passed the Sterkfontein Caves as the Blaaubankspruit runs "over" the Sterkfontein Caves.

Water specialist Garfield Krige said he believed the acidic mine water of the West Rand had reached the Hartbeespoort Dam "long ago".

The heavy rains over the past two weeks have filled the underground mined-out pockets on the West Rand to such an extent that there are now about 40 million litres of sour mine water in the Tweelopiespruit each day.

Krige, who lives in the Cradle of Mankind, said stones in the area where the Blaaubankspruit flowed, are also coloured bright orange.

The whole shore area of the Tweelopiespruit is coloured dark orange.

What is AMD - Acid Mine Drainage?

AMD is a deadly cocktail of chemicals which includes various sulphates, and metals such as lead, magnesium, cadmium, bismuth, and radioactive uranium, strontium (one of uranium’s progeny) and radium which decays into radon, radon gas, polonium, and thorium.

Ministers 'simple and quick’ solution - neutralisation!

What is neutralisation?

Neutralisation is simply a pH adjustment, for example by adding lime to acid mine water. Neutralisation with lime removes some of the sulphate salts from the water, but not enough. It makes metals fall out of the water to the bottom of the water course.

In the West Rand, neutralisation of AMD has resulted in the discharge of water with high sulphate salt content and a stream lined with metal deposits. (See photo right and click here: ‘Inadequate treatment of acid water flowing into Tweelopiespruit’.)

Neutralisation also does not deal with radioactive particles from uranium in AMD.
For neutralisation to be an effective water treatment method, the water needs to settle in holding tanks and the deposited toxic sludge removed and disposed of safely.

Alex and his family did not leave this country because of the crumbling public service system. Those problems were “workable”. They had their own electricity generator, purified their own water, and had private health care.

Nor were they put off by concerns for the country’s future. Quite the opposite, actually. They were “in for the fight of putting South Africa back together”.

Then why did they leave?

Alex says they were pushed out of South Africa against their will. He speaks of anger at having to see everything he worked for, for 20 years, go down the drain.

People who told him he was brave to immigrate had it all wrong. It had nothing to do with being brave: he was afraid.

Fear drove them out of South Africa:

Those of you who have been a victim of crime can attest to that cold fear, that fear you can only know once you have been through it and if you're lucky survived.

I remember one of the cops who found me tied up after one of the incidents saying to me: "You don't get a second chance like this twice in life".

After three home invasions and two shootings while shopping at their local mall, the family came to the end of their tether:

I had reached a point where I was surviving on two hours sleep a night for two years and we were literally taking shifts.

I can't say I miss South Africa because the lifestyle I missed is no longer there; one cannot braai outside without half an eye out for intruders, one can no longer simply sleep on the beach or the side of the road during holidays, nor really go for walks and enjoy nature, one cannot go out and enjoy a summers evening without constantly watching your back.

So while I do miss the days of doing that, I know that it does not exist for now in South Africa and therefore there is nothing to miss.

So for now I am happy doing my own laundry, it really doesn't take that long and is a good education for the kids, I no longer have a drunk gardener I am terrified of firing for fear of reprisal, knocking on my windows and harassing the household when he's been drinking. Or a security guard who may just turn on me one day. Yes I do miss the days when people had respect for people and life in South Africa and life was good.... but that no longer exists there black or white.

I want to point out that this family’s living standard was way above average. Most South Africans don’t employ servants and security guards. And just as well. A cop once told me that practically all house robberies are inside jobs.

Matric results 'manipulated'

It would appear to me that the pass percentage for the 2010 exam results is being manipulated to make the Department of Education (read Minister) look good.

I quote: "The Chief Director of Exams Nkosinathi Sishi said 364 513 pupils passed their exams. There were 643 546 candidates who sat for the exams, of whom 537 543 wrote all seven subjects."

If one calculates the number of learners that passed as a percentage of the learners that "wrote all seven subjects" then the figure of 67.8% is correct.

But what happened to the 106 003 learners, the difference between the 643 546 candidates, who sat the exam and the 537 543 candidates who wrote all seven subjects?

They seem to mysteriously have fallen into one of the gaping cracks in the South African education system.

Calculating the number of learners who passed as a percentage of the number who "sat" the exam one gets a new and more realistic figure of 56.6%.

This would appear to me to be the true percentage as surely those that did not complete the exams must still remain part of the statistics.

I don't know how the number-crunching was done last year, so cannot comment whether the percentage is up or down on last year.

SA Education system the 4th worst in the world according to Newsweek

Bottom of the pile - Newsweek‘s (16 August 2010) list of the world’s best countries put South Africa at 82nd overall, and ranks our education system 97th out of 100, which is 4th from the bottom. South Africa’s education performance is even ranked below countries like Mozambique, Bangladesh and Iran, states less wealthy or less free.

Let's be honest: our dysfunctional education system cannot continue as is. We've known this for a long time, and now the international community knows it. We've won a pitiful "race to the bottom", something for which we should feel ashamed. Now it's time to make the hard decisions, commit to a standard of excellence, and get our education system on track.

ANC to investigate causes of lightning.

I had to copy this. What a laugh! KwaZulu-Natal MEC for co-operative governance and traditional affairs Nomsa Dube on Monday called on the national department of science and technology to investigate the causes of lightning after seven people died in lightning strikes.

"We will do an investigation and talk to the department of science and technology on what is the cause of the lightning. Scientists from the department could perhaps help us and come up with instruments that could help community members protect themselves against lightning. The department has dealt with floods and fires, but lightning was new to us." said Nomsa Brightspark Dube.

That joke about having an electrifying personality is only funny for so long. It's really annoying when you get zapped every time you touch something.

Now with that new lightning thing, there's a whole new world we can barely fathom. We shall call upon the spirits for guidance, visit a sangoma, and eat the powerful medicine of human body parts, a bowl of stewed anuses and dicks, the bones will show us the way, then our ancestral spirits will send messages regarding the bird of lightning who is punishing the wicked and evildoers who are guilty of theft and murder and have been sent to a bad heaven. This is a warning to the people who don’t live in South Africa, but plan to travel here at some point or another. Please note, if you’re from a country where you can rely on public transport, this post is especially for you. You need to note that public transport in South Africa is not safe – and shouldn’t be attempted unless you’re really brave. Rather consider renting a car from Avis, or any of those agents…

In South Africa, yes there are buses . And yes, there are taxis. But you need to note that when you use either of these it might be the last thing you ever do.

These are not taxis in the typical Western sense of the term like you know them in the UK or the US. The industry is made up mostly of 16-seater commuter kombi buses which are more often than not unsafe or not roadworthy. Minibus taxi drivers are known for their disregard for the road rules and for dangerously overloading their vehicles with passengers of sometimes upto as many as 33 passengers. The taxi drivers have long since been notorious in South Africa. Most minibus taxis drive at high speed like the devil himself.

Quoting Thomas Thale:

“MINIBUS taxis are by far the cheapest and most popular form of public transport in South Africa, used mainly by the urban and rural poor. But if you are a visitor to Johannesburg, using a taxi can prove bewildering and even frightening.”

Buses are all the same. In the past month I have seen two bus accidents on my route to work, and three taxi accidents in Pretoria. Just to give you an idea, I live about 7km from work. All these accidents were due to speeding & reckless driving (e.g. running a red traffic light). Obviously depending on which bus driver you land up with, but most of the ones I come across drive like they stole the bus.

Firstly they endanger the passengers – secondly normal road users are subject to share the road with these people and public anger against minibus taxi drivers is reaching boiling point.

Car accidents in South Africa are as common as snow in Russia. Everyone knows someone who’s been in an accident – if they weren’t in one themself. Its strange how we just put up with it really?? Its strange how people get arrested for not paying parking tickets, but bus drivers and taxi driver get to endanger thousands of people’s lives each day – without any penalization. I have never seen the Metro police give a ticket to a taxi or a bus driver. Maybe I’m just never in the right place. The Metro police don’t intervene because … I don’t know why?…

The thugs that cause the carnage on SA roads.

The 2010/2011 Festive Season took its toll yet again - over 1300 people died on our roads and multiple others were injured in car crashes across the country.

South African road safety statistics are far from comforting. One in two out of approximately 150 000 public minibus taxis is involved in an accident every year. According to the AA, it recorded an annual total of 70 000 minibus taxi crashes, indicating that taxis in the country amount for double the rate of crashes compared to all other passenger vehicles. According to media reports, at least 74 people were killed and 203 injured in minibus taxi accidents across the country in August and early September alone. So if you're really worried about staying alive out there, do NOT take a minibus taxi.

You're much more likely to die on the road especially when Arrive Alive and the rest of the nanny-state crew can't be bothered to make a big deal of it. Too little (if any) law and order has left the public transport sector in chaos which in turn has resulted in minibus taxi drivers having scant respect for their vehicles, the safety of their passengers and no respect for other vehicles sharing the roads with them.

What gives? Why does the Arrive Alive campaign make so much noise during the holidays, and go so silent for the rest of the year? As if the government's scare-programme and its apparently opportunistic traffic law enforcement over the holidays isn't enough we get advertising campaigns threatening rape in AIDS-infested prisons. Why does anyone think it acceptable to terrify people during the festive season with advertisements that suggest gang-rape in prison as an acceptable penalty for drink-driving? Yes, there is no excuse for drunk driving. The same goes for any other dangerous driving or unsafe vehicles.

Report bad minibus taxi drivers to the national traffic call centre on 0861 400 800 (which surprise, surprise, is "in the process of upgrading its system").

4 killed, 44 hurt in horror N1 crash - Today 2011-01-03

Four people were killed and 44 others injured when a packed minibus taxi and a bakkie collided along the N1 freeway near Bela Bela on Monday afternoon, paramedics said.

Paramedics arrived on scene and found both vehicles mangled near the roadway, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said.

Ten people sustained critical injuries, 20 others suffered serious injuries and 13 had from minor to moderate injuries.

All the injured people were taken to Meulmed Hospital and various other nearby health centres.

The cause of the accident was not known. ("stupid is as stupid does")

Millions gather worldwide to welcome the new year

The midnight ball dropped in New York as millions gathered around Times Square, fireworks flew over Sydney Harbor. New Zealand and many South Pacific island nations sang and danced their way into 2011. In Europe, Greeks, Irish and Spaniards partied through the night. As the clock ticked closer to 2011, cities across Asia readied for midnight events. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered along Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour to watch fireworks explode. In central Tokyo, thousands packed in to count down until midnight. Even communist Vietnam held a rare Western-style countdown to the new year as the world ushered in 2011.

The AD/BC aspect of the current calendar we use globally is not accidental or insignificant. A distinction between periods of time historically was decided on many years ago. A historical event of world significance was used as the line drawn in the sand and its effectiveness has just as much relevance now as when it was first decided on and accepted to use.

2011 years ago, in the Middle East, an event occurred that permanently changed the world. Because of that event, history was split. Every time you write the date you are forced to acknowledge that Jesus has influenced the course of history more than any man. The birth of Christ utterly altered the way we measure time. He turned aside the river of the ages out of its course and lifted the centuries off their hinges. His birth and death are the markers by which most of the world measures time and have become major holidays in Western civilization. Now, the whole world counts time as before Christ (BC) and AD (Anno Domini), in the year of the Lord. It is ironic that even the most vitriolic atheists have to acknowledge the centrality of Christ every time that they write the date!

In fact, the Revolutionary Convention, during the French Revolution, attempted to abolish the Christian calendar and introduce a 10-day work week, counting the years from the establishment of their “Republic”, beginning 1792. It needs hardly to be pointed out that they failed.

Every time December 25 comes around and you get the day off or double time or wish someone a "Merry Christmas", you must again admit that he is far more important to mankind than any other historical figure. At the very least, he must have been one of the greatest men in history. No other figure in human history has been the subject of more research, books and articles. Over the centuries, thousands of men have dedicated their lives to studying and documenting His life. His book is by far the most widely purchased, best selling book of all time having sold more than 6billion copies and it is still the most preferred book for the masses.

Politician accuses poultry manufacturers of racism

The leader of the South African Communist Party has accused poultry manufacturers of racism.

Blade Nzimande said that the poultry industry was selling "rotten" meat to black people.

He said chicken past its best-before date was being recycled - thawed, washed and injected with flavouring - then sold to shops in black townships.

A spokesman for the poultry industry admitted the practice takes place, but said it was both safe and legal.

The meat is removed from major chains of supermarkets and is re-distributed to spaza shops - smaller, family-run shops which serve black communities - and independent wholesalers.

'Nothing racist'

"I can tell you now that more than 80% of ordinary black South Africans, they get their food from the spaza shops which means that you are actually selling rotten meat to black people," Blade Nzimande said.

"We just find this deeply offensive and racist, frankly."

A spokesman for the poultry industry agreed that the process of recycling chicken did take place, but said it was legal and that all manufacturers guaranteed the safety of their products.

"There's nothing racist about this process," Kevin Lovell told the BBC's Martin Plaut.

He added that the chickens were tested and certified by the producers before being sent out again and that these standards were actually higher than those required by the department of health.

But he also accepted that re-worked chicken did not go on sale in major supermarkets, which served the country's wealthier suburbs.

According to the South African Press Assocation, Mr Nzimande has called for an enquiry into the practice.
